I honestly don't follow the logic here... R.E.M. fans versus Peppers fans—what, are we supposed to wear uniforms?
I enjoy listening to both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and R.E.M. just as much, and I've seen both live—but my point was simply that the 'Peppers' are currently branded as the 'ultimate rock band,' arguably much harder-hitting than R.E.M., though that perception kind of evaporates when you see them in person... their set feels almost like a lullaby compared to an R.E.M. show.
The bottom line is they are incredible live, so even if you aren't a die-hard fan, you should go. They're worth every cent...

Look, I love R.E.M., but it’s not like they’re any other band to me.
Still, I guess it would be totally worth it to go hear them—it’d give me $100, so why not? 🙂 It’s definitely better than blowing cash on, say, a t-shirt that I’ll end up realizing I don't even like.

It makes absolutely zero sense to compare R.E.M. to Radiohead (and that applies to that idiot writing for The New York Times, too).

During the intro of their set at Coachella 2003, Thom Yorke actually gave a shout-out to R.E.M., noting how much of an influence they had on them.

I’m just hoping we don't run into that same ticket frenzy we saw with the Pixies—trying to snag a ticket in America was a goddamn art form. The price isn't even the main issue; I just hope they don't try to charge $40 or more (though I suspect R.E.M. usually commands a $100,000 appearance fee, but I can't be certain on that specific figure).

If they play an outdoor venue, I'll gladly freeze my ass off just to see them.

Wrong... I'm a huge fan of the Peppers. Probably one of the most dedicated followers to ever grace this forum. That said, I love R.E.M. too. And I'll say it again: out of all those massive bands, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are the only ones I've actually seen live. That’s where the comparison comes from.
