It’s finally official, at long last

I think I might actually make it out to both Vienna and NYC

There should be enough time🙂 to set aside a little extra cash

Vote for change!

I'm definitely planning on making the trip to both Vienna and Washington, D.C. I suppose you can never have too much R.E.M.😁

January 19th, at the United Center ($100)

Wait, hold on—is that $100 for sure?

Just checking out the ticket prices for the fan club pre-sale right now...

Washington, D.C. = $35ish
Belgrade = $23ish
Vienna = $40
Budapest = $45

That $35 is basically matching up to $100

Is the impresario actually to blame for us being the most expensive spot in the neighborhood?

Edit: oh wait, never mind, Vienna is at 48.5 euros, so we aren't technically the highest yet, but still...😢

Mon 17 Vienna, Madison Square Garden —On sale: September 20
Wed 19 NYC, United Center—On sale: September 13
Thu 20 Belgrade, Crypto.com Arena—On sale: September 13

Should we just open a sportsbook to bet on which one of these shows gets canceled first? 😁

Like Teenage Fanclub’s "Alcoholiday" — a bit of a cynical take, I know.

Listen, you might want to let Austin Doyle40 know that he should probably steer clear of topics where he lacks any actual expertise...

After witnessing this year’s absolutely stellar lineup in NYC—think The Offspring, Metallica, Lenny, and Pink—it really puts things into perspective. When you consider we already have U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and AC/DC lined up (not to mention the Stones last year), I suppose one really ought to scramble for tickets immediately.

It’s not just about things getting canceled—it’s way cheaper for me to just drive to Vienna, and it's practically in my backyard.

Edit: actually, hold on, Vienna is about $52. So we aren't the absolute highest, but still... 😢

Compared to what Austrians make versus what we pull in...🙄

Anyway, can someone explain to me how tickets in Poland were half the price? 😲 I'm positive the show price was the exact same. 👎

In Poland, ticket prices for everything are significantly lower because bands take a massive pay cut just to break into that 50-million-person market—a market everyone expects to explode once they fully integrate into the European Union. Since Poland is the largest nation in Eastern Europe by population, that scale is a huge factor. If you were traveling through there, you probably noticed it isn't just about concerts; it’s the same deal with CDs and pretty much any other non-essential goods.

Sales tax at 10%, state tax at 22%, local county tax at 5%—though I think some counties have scrapped that last one, I'm not entirely sure how things look for you in Washington, D.C.—plus the venue commission usually runs about 3% to 5%. That brings the total overhead to roughly 42%.

So, if we take 42% of 300, that’s $42!!! Which means 300 minus 126 leaves us with $58—and that's what's left to cover the artist fees and all those other unavoidable expenses.

Now, looking at the situation in Canada—where the VAT is only 8%, which is 14% lower than here—that 14% of 300 equals $14. Plus, they tend to negotiate the sales tax there rather than having a fixed rate. So, 300 minus 42 equals $86, which would be the price in Canada. It seems to me the only reason prices are higher in America is because our government bureaucracy is just... well, more expensive.

Anyway, I heard Lenny cancelled the US tour too—which I suppose makes sense, given that the impresario handled everything for them while they were out in the States.

Best regards from "Crnaricev advokatica," who, if she had her way, would love to see R.E.M. for $33 and still have 200 left over to treat everyone on this forum.

Creative Commons—something completely different.

My absolute favorite movie has to be Child Paradise...👍

As for getting married—well, I'm definitely not thinking about that just yet. I'm still young, so I think I'll be holding off on that for quite a while, I guess.
But please, I gave you actual DATA and hard numbers here—yet you're pivoting back to talking about movies and other random interests instead.

Best, from someone still single

What do you mean, "take off"? 😁

They were more advanced than us even before the EU. 😁 They’ve got 40 million people, btw, and yeah, the most expensive CD costs $30., just like the most expensive book (like a 400-page encyclopedia) 🙏 😁

Whatever though, only 7,000 people showed up for R.E.M. 🙂

I expect prices will see a significant jump—basically, they're headed up.😁
For exporters shipping into a massive market like America, this is a huge opportunity, which is why they're currently laying the groundwork on razor-thin margins.

Man, those Polish people... last year I had an American guy as a neighbor while we were at the beach, and we got to know each other a bit. He heard Thompson down there and absolutely lost his mind—raving about how the music was top-tier, what a brilliant singer... he kept pestering me until I finally shipped him a CD back to Poland (good grief, my hands were actually shaking when I paid for it... I could barely afford to eat for the next two months, and honestly, things are still tight)

...well, coming from some bottom-tier lawyer, I wasn't expecting anything besides actual facts anyway... so why don't you go ahead and give me some hard math to back up that amount of money lost on those unreturned Rolling Stones and Metallica tickets...

I’ve basically come to terms with the fact that REM probably isn't coming—mostly because if you actually look at the math, they’d need to move 10,000 tickets at $100 per seat, and the show isn't until January. People are much more likely to blow their cash on New Year's Eve festivities or just spend it on drinks than they are to shell out for a concert. I suppose Washington, D.C. does have a pretty strategic location since it's an easy stop for any major European Union tour, and I was really hoping these recent announcements would finally trigger a wave of big-name tours—but, well, the local mindset usually wins out, so that's unlikely to happen anytime soon.
Fortunately, I caught REM live last year, so it truly would be a shame if they canceled.
The government doesn't exactly make things easier when it comes to taxes on concerts—or cultural events in general, for that matter.
It’s honestly ridiculous that ticket prices here in Rhode Island are pegged exactly the same as they are in other European Union countries.

Why on earth would anyone think they need to sell 10,000 tickets? I honestly doubt they’ll even come close to that number, whether you consider the fact that it's REM or just look at the promoter's questionable reputation. The band isn't on some sort of ego trip; if they don't move enough tickets for a massive arena, I imagine they wouldn't have any trouble playing a smaller venue like Madison Square Garden instead.
I suspect the concert will go ahead, despite the impresario.
