Which version of Napster should I install?

I’ve been digging through the forums, and I know a link exists somewhere. I just don't want anything bundled with Spyware or any of that junk. There was definitely a link posted here at some point.

I’ve got an installer for Kazaa 2.1 sitting here. Is that version safe to use?

I can't say which one reigns supreme, but I personally run Kazaa gold and have absolutely zero complaints about its performance.😉

Honestly, if 2.1 is working fine for you, just stick with it.

The return of K-lite

Following the eMule law—I managed to grab AutoCAD, AutoCAD Map, Raster Design, and CorelDRAW at 4:00 AM. Everything was full ISO files, nothing ripped.

If I were you, I’d grab Kazaa 2.6. Since you’re clearly avoiding Spyware and adware, do yourself a favor and install Diet Coke alongside it—it’s the premier tool for tweaking Kazaa and accessing those "forbidden" hidden settings you can't touch without a remover. When you download Kazaa, don't even bother opening it; install Diet Coke first. Run Diet Coke, and it handles everything: it locates the Kazaa installation, strips out all the junk, essentially hacks the software for you, and makes life easy. You’ll be launching Kazaa through Diet Coke from now on. Forget about the original icon. My strong advice is to install Diet Coke regardless, and that applies to any version from 2.00 to 2.62. If you're using Kazaa Gold or Lite, you don't strictly need it unless you want to mess with specific settings like participation levels.

Man, this Kazaa 2.1 version is just a total mess. It keeps breaking on me constantly, and trying to deal with all these P2P networking errors is such a headache... one minute it’s fine, then suddenly everything goes sideways. And don't even get me started on searching—I'll type in exactly what I need and the whole app just crashes right in my face. Honestly, 🙄

I used to use Kazaa Lite back in the day, but that's pretty much ancient history now 😢
You can still find a few things here and there, but man, it feels like everything has just vanished into thin air 😢.

I’ve been using Kazaa Lite which I managed to snag a few months back, and honestly, it does the job perfectly. It's fast, comes with that built-in accelerator, maintains a solid participation level, and so on...

Lately, though, it seems like you can't find a decent download anywhere. On www.soft32.com, they claim to have it available, but the file is completely broken... something feels off there. I suppose I should just be grateful I already have this version tucked away.

Kazaa 2.1 doesn't have nearly as much crap in it as the newer version. The only annoyance is how it asks if you want to upgrade every single time you open it.

My advice: if you're looking for music, stick with Napster. For movies, I still think eMule is the better bet.

What actually determines my download speeds? Sometimes it says 0.5, yet I'm downloading one file while my modem is screaming along at 52—and even then, it’s only hitting that speed about 30-50% of the time.

It might be that the bandwidth is limited on their end. It really depends on the other person's connection. For example, I personally capped my upload to 1.5 KB so I could prioritize my max download speeds.

So yeah, it all comes down to the other side. 🙂

Are you guys intentionally throttling this? Just let me know so I can figure out my next move.

Well, I'm not entirely sure... I'll be browsing the web, and then suddenly one download just hogs the entire bandwidth. I don't want to sit around waiting forever just because someone else is grabbing something. Personally, I usually download things while surfing simultaneously.🙂

That’s actually why Napster lets you pull from multiple sources at once if you use the "search for more..." option via right-click.

Well, since you have over 1,000 files being shared, you're basically a K-Lite pro, so in theory, you really ought to be seeing much higher speeds already.
2. If you right-click all the files you're sharing and set their integrity to "Excellent," that should also help boost your download speeds significantly.
