Anyone caught this yet? What did you guys think?

I know Mike Newell directed it, which is basically my cue to watch. From what I’ve heard, it’s like a female-led version of Dead Poets Society...

He also did Donnie Brasco.
👍 👍

I'll definitely be watching it, just not sure when. I'll report back.

I’m planning on checking this movie out too, but honestly, I’m a little wary of that whole "female version of Dead Poets Society" pitch. Usually, when people frame it like that, it just inflates my expectations, and then I end up disappointed when the actual film doesn't live up to the hype.

From what I’ve heard in the trailers, though, it sounds pretty promising. If it manages to capture even half the magic of Dead Poets Society, I think I’ll be satisfied.
(Now that I’ve actually said that out loud, I feel like I should probably brace myself for a lightning strike or hear some cosmic voice in the background whispering, "Yeah, right... just keep dreaming.")

Time magazine didn't hold back at all when they slapped it with the title of 'worst movie of the year.'

Yeah... that was the lightning bolt I was waiting for.
And man, wasn't the anticipation sweet while it actually lasted? 🙂

Who on earth talked me into watching that absolute circus? I’ll have a few more thoughts once I’ve actually managed to pull myself together emotionally. 🙂

Pretty rough, huh?

Is it really that bad, though? Hope dies last. 😉 .

Sure, hope is the last thing to die, right up until the moment it finally withers away!

I know Mike Newell directed it, so that’s enough of a reason for me to check it out. Heard it's basically a female version of Dead Poets Society...

Watched it. It's alright, with caveats.

1) You gotta be into J. Roberts.

2) You have to buy into the whole Dead Poets Society vibe—awakening the consciousness of some overachieving schoolgirls fighting against the petty, conservative mindset of an all-female college that mirrored society back then.

3) You can handle a movie with zero blood, zero shootouts, zero car chases, and zero sex. Honestly, no sex at all. No romance, no kissing, nothing.

4) You need to be down for movies like Howards End.

If you hit at least 3 of those 4 marks, you'll probably dig it.
It’s a bit smug, preachy, and sterile—but visually it's fine. Plus, there's a certain voyeuristic interest to seeing inside an all-girls college.😉 )

If you're the type who follows directors first, then yeah, go for M. Newell, but don't expect anything like Donnie Brasco or Al Pacino levels of acting. Watch Enchanted April instead.

The film is absolutely superb! Simply magnificent!
Ultimately, the quality of a cinematic work depends entirely upon the perspective from which one chooses to view it.
To put it succinctly: this film is nothing short of brilliant!
It stands alongside masterpieces such as Paycheck, Saving Little Nemo, Love Actually, and Big Fish (which I insist you all go see immediately!!!), among others. 😁

It all really comes down to the perspective you take when watching a film.

So, I have to ask—what was your specific perspective? What did it look like from row 8, seat 7 on the right side of the orchestra section? 😁 🙂

I’m talking about being tucked under a theater seat—total blind spot, maybe a sharp angle, less than 45 degrees or whatever. So when you finally catch a glimpse of a Pollock for the first time in your life, you're just thinking, "Who's this kid? Some avant-garde genius?"😁

Taking a tip from Kevin Wood22, I’m gonna check out this movie... if it's a total bust, I'll just grab it on DVD later.

Look, don't come knocking on my door later when Death shows up with a scythe to take you early just because the flick sucked. Honestly though, Death would probably just breeze through my place like something out of Monty Python.

Man, Death is totally checked out... peace, brother... 😎

The movie is 👎

pathetic

fluffy

slow, boring, lacking dialogue and depth

clueless

THE MOVIE HAS ZERO DRAMA OR PLOT....

****

REMEMBER THAT Dead Poets Society, which is a truly brilliant film, was actually an Oscar contender...

Dead Poets Society is such an energetic film

full of heart 🙂

dialogue....lessons....drama ....

whereas this movie is basically a 2% imitation....

****

To give you an idea of how disappointed I am, just consider this: every single movie I rent from the video store and rip to my hard drive ends up freezing during playback...

but it didn't even cross my mind to bother ripping this godforsaken terrible movie.

The only redeeming quality of that film is Tori Amos.

A congressional hearing or a lecture on Old English linguistics can be a total drag. This movie actually manages to be more boring than both.

I found the film quite compelling... the actresses delivered truly impressive performances. I’ve always had a soft spot for little Gyllenhaal (her brother is 😍, haha)
