Honestly, the worst part is when you bite them so much that the skin starts pulling tight around the nail, which totally prevents them from growing back properly in the first place...
My sister is exactly like that. She’s constantly struggling to grow out her nails, but it’s a losing battle because she can't help but bite them off the second they get long enough. It’s like this total OCD loop. Every single time I see her, her fingers are already halfway in her mouth.
I don't know how people do it—it honestly grosses me out thinking about shoving those fingertips under your teeth and into your mouth, especially if you haven't even washed your hands lately. You could pick up all sorts of nasty bacteria that way.

I’ve already stated in two separate posts within this thread that I have no intention of biting them—but don't mistake my patience for permanent. This is the third time I'm saying it, and frankly, I won't be repeating myself a fourth time.🙂

I'm 27 and stuck with this awful habit. My case is a bit tougher. I've been biting my nails for as long as I can remember, and now the skin around my cuticles is raised and flush with the nail bed instead of being underneath, making my hands look terrible. When I was a kid, I figured I'd just grow out of it, but it hasn't happened. It’s most embarrassing at work since I deal with people all day. I'd look for help, but honestly, going to a nail salon feels awkward. Just last week, I picked up some of that bitter liquid from the drugstore, so we'll see how that goes—so far, so good. I really want to know if it's actually possible for those deformed cuticles to go back to normal... has anyone actually pulled it off?....

Well, you could always try getting a gel overlay or even just using Trend polish. I think that would help too, since it makes your nails so tough you can't even bite or pick at them... plus, they look much better...😉

I’ve got those same nervous habits myself. I’ve been biting my nails for at least eight years now, and it’s such an unconscious reflex—I don't even realize I'm doing it until the damage is already done.
I really want to quit, but it feels impossible. Honestly, I think it might be worse than smoking. With cigarettes, you have to actually have them on hand, but with nail biting, your hands are always right there with you!

Does anyone happen to know a truly PROFESSIONAL cosmetic clinic where I could actually get some real help? I’ve been thinking about booking an appointment, but honestly, I’m a bit self-conscious; I really want to find a place where the staff has seen much worse than what I'm dealing with. If you've had a good experience somewhere, I'd really appreciate the lead (feel free to DM me)

Figure I’ll jump in on this complaining thread too.

I’ve been biting my nails for as long as I can remember. Honestly, I've tried everything to make it stop—different threats, different methods—but nothing sticks. There was even a point where I completely lost one nail altogether. 😠

Then about two years ago, I decided to try gel manicures, and man, they looked incredible. 😍 But around the five-month mark, I just gave up on them because I couldn't justify the constant trips to the salon for touch-ups. My natural nails had actually turned out beautiful. During that year and a half, they grew out properly and lost that wide, blunt look. They even felt stronger. So, for about a month there, I actually had these gorgeous, long nails. 😍 Then, naturally, finals week hit. My hands were constantly hovering near my mouth—a habit I never quite broke, even when I had the gel protecting them. My nails weakened again, started splitting, and then—of course—I went right back to 🙄 biting. I told myself it was just a temporary thing because of the exams, that I'd let them grow back once things settled down. Yeah, right. Within a week, I was right back to square one. They’re short again, wide, and the cuticle looks bigger than the actual nail itself. Now, when I bite them down too far, my whole finger starts throbbing so hard I can barely hold anything. 🙄 It’s honestly pathetic, but I just can't seem to help myself. 🙂

I’d love to quit, really, but I just can't. It’s my absolute vice 😁

I usually manage to hold out for maybe a week before I start biting them all over again. And honestly? It happens most when I’m feeling stressed, wired, or just plain cranky.

Look, folks—if you can't seem to stop the habit, just go get some acrylics done.🙏
Seeing bitten nails on a woman is honestly desperate. It’s just a bad look.😢
Besides, there are those bitter-tasting manicures out there—you know, the ones designed to punish you if you try to bite—so when you inevitably put your fingers to your mouth... you'll regret it.🤣

I can finally say this with total pride: three months ago, I officially quit biting my nails! It’s been about 29 years—okay, maybe I cheated once or twice over the decades 😁—but now all that money goes toward nail polish and manicures instead 😁
How did it happen? Honestly, I don't know. One day, I had this massive blowout with my partner (we went back and forth, he had some valid points, but hey, I had to get my word in too!) and ever since that fight, I just haven't bitten them 🤷 I've tried everything else before, including acrylics, but I ended up biting those right off, too 🙄

Alright, I figured I’d jump in here too....
I actually went through that same nightmare phase where I’d bite my nails down until they were bleeding—it was brutal. I remember one time it hurt so bad I couldn't even sit through class and take notes because my fingertips were throbbing...😁...But honestly, thank God for braces, because ever since I got them put on, the nail-biting habit just stopped. If it wasn't for the braces, I’d probably still be stuck in that same old loop...🙂...I tried quitting a million times before, but the second my nails started growing back, I’d find myself just waiting for the urge to tear them off again. It was totally insane...😁.Now, though, they actually look decent—straight and clean. And seriously, if anyone else is struggling with this, just try to stop. For some people, your hands are the first thing they notice about you, and trust me, you don't want to leave a bad impression on someone just because your nails look like a wreck...🙂

So, once a month I try this little "treatment" to stop myself from biting my nails. I picked up some random bitter polish at Miller's—not even a big brand, just whatever was there—and honestly? It’s absolutely gross. It gets all over your lips, and then everything you eat tastes like straight-up chemicals. Like, gaggingly bad. :riga: But here's the real kicker: the color is this weird, yellowish shade. If I put it on my nails, I look like a heavy smoker, which is just not the vibe. And trying to layer it over a regular manicure is such a massive headache that I just can't be bothered to 😬

I’ve got a massive problem with biting my nails. Honestly, I’ve been doing it for as long as I can remember, it's just a deep-seated habit at this point. The real issue is that my nails have actually grown out a bit—they're sitting at maybe 4 to 7 mm right now—and let me tell you, they look absolutely terrible.
It’s almost gotten to the point where there’s barely any nail left because I end up biting the skin around them too. My fingertips are constantly sore, and I always manage to make myself bleed, which is when things get really ugly. I know plenty of people who struggle with nail biting, but I don't think I've ever met anyone quite as much of an addict as I am.
It’s honestly embarrassing; I find myself hesitating to grab a handrail on the bus or avoiding all sorts of social situations because of how my hands look.
I’ve tried those bitter tasting polishes they sell at CVS, but even then, I still ended up biting through it. I’m wondering if there’s actually any way to stop this madness. Since I'm a guy, I don't even know if getting some kind of artificial nails or some sort of protective coating would even be an option for me. Any help at all would be massively appreciated.

It’s all about your own mindset, really...
For me, the whole "I'm too embarrassed to show off these bitten-down nails" thing was more than enough reason to call it quits... because, honestly, I was genuinely mortified...

My cousin finally kicked her nail-biting habit by getting acrylics. Since she became obsessed with keeping them looking perfect, she hasn't touched them once.
But let’s be real—nail biting isn't just a bad habit; it's usually rooted in something deeper psychologically. We're talking anxiety, escapism, self-sabotage... there's a massive spectrum of underlying issues at play here.

If you want to try a fix, you could look into getting a gel overlay that cures under a UV lamp. The catch is whether your current nail beds are actually healthy enough to handle the filing and the application process. Honestly, just head down to a local nail salon and get a professional opinion.

So, I've run into a bit of an issue—I finally managed to stop biting my nails, but now I’ve started picking at the skin around them. It's not even that I'm biting it, per se, just constant little nibbles... it leaves the area looking red and pretty unsightly. I've decided to quit the habit altogether, which is a win, but this redness is really bothering me. Does anyone know of a good cream or something to help soothe it? Here is a photo showing where it's irritated—(I used my middle finger just for the sake of the photo, but it's actually my index and thumb that are the problem)

Goodness, there are just so many recipes flying around. One person suggests using Tabasco, while someone else is hunting down bitter hot sauces. It’s getting a bit overwhelming. I wonder if anyone else is starting to feel a little fatigued by all these options.

As an alternative, try dipping your nails in honey first, then adding just a few drops of lemon juice over them. You could also try soaking them in warm milk before coating them in cocoa powder.

Forget about recipes—if you haven't already purged that racism from your head and decided you actually want to change, nothing else is going to work. I walked away from all that over three years ago and I've been doing just fine 😬 sounds like I'm talking about some kind of drug addiction, doesn't it?

Hey everyone, I’m hoping it’s okay to start this thread here and that I haven't accidentally doubled up on an existing topic :S I've been struggling with nail biting for a really long time now. I'm 16, currently a sophomore in high school, and it feels like everyone else my age has perfectly manicured hands while I'm actually embarrassed to even show mine. This has been going on since I was about 7 or 8 years old. Everyone tells me it's unhygienic, and honestly, I know they're right, but I just can't seem to stop myself. It's gotten to the point where I'd feel too self-conscious to even talk to a doctor about it, which is frustrating because I'd love professional help if I could face it. Sometimes I even end up 😢 eating them, and I just don't know what else to say. Please, if any of you have some advice on how to kick this habit at home without having to go through a medical appointment, I would really appreciate it. Thanks, and cheers.

Look, I’ve got a massive problem with biting my nails—but it’s specific. It’s just my two index fingers; I don't touch the others at all.
It’s gotten to the point where it feels less like a bad habit and more like a full-blown addiction—maybe even an actual disorder—because honestly, stopping feels impossible. I haven't reached out for help before because I always figured it was just "normal," you know? I've been doing this for as long as I can remember. Those two nails? They never grow past a centimeter.
On top of that, I have a real issue with my cuticles. I end up picking at them until they actually bleed—I'm talking enough blood to cover my whole finger—and then my hands get so weak and sore I can barely do anything with them.
Does anyone here know how someone deals with a case this intense?

It’s turned into a serious addiction, maybe even an actual disorder, because there's zero chance of me stopping on my own. I never thought to ask for help before since I figured it was normal—I've done this for as long as I can remember. Those two nails never grow past a centimeter.
The cuticles are also a mess. I pick at them until they bleed so badly my whole finger is covered in blood, then my hands get too weak to even function.
Does anyone know how to handle cases this severe?

Just like any other addiction, it comes down to willpower. Trim those nails and cut back the cuticles every few days... nothing left to bite then.

Try to figure out what's causing your stress and dial it down.
