Hey everyone. I’ve managed to stop biting my nails for about two weeks now, though I prefer not to dwell on the exact number just to keep my momentum going. My hand still drifts toward my mouth occasionally, but I’ve been able to maintain control. So far, I haven't even broken a single nail, and I'm hoping that streak continues. Whenever the urge hits, I get this strange, uncomfortable sensation in my fingertips; I usually handle it by washing my hands, which seems to help—I suppose it’s a bit like a withdrawal symptom. Even though I've stopped, I haven't noticed any actual improvement in the appearance of my nails or the surrounding cuticles yet. My nails are quite wide and the skin stays tight. For those of you who quit biting naturally without resorting to acrylics or gels, when can I realistically expect to see progress? How does the recovery process actually unfold? Having a timeline would serve as much-needed motivation to keep pushing forward. Previously, I was a chronic biter, often tearing the skin around the nail bed, and now that they are finally growing, there is a noticeable gap under the nail tip. 😢
I would appreciate some insight from anyone who can help. 🙂
Some encouragement would go a long way. 🙂

Kenneth Ward21 said:Hey everyone, so I haven’t bitten my nails for about two weeks now—maybe even longer, really, because I don't even want to count the days since it kind of gives me that extra push to keep going. My hand still drifts toward my mouth every now and then, but I manage to catch myself before doing anything stupid, and so far, I haven't even managed to tear off a single nail, which feels like a win. Fingers crossed it stays that way. Now, whenever the urge hits, I get this weird, uncomfortable sensation in my fingertips, and honestly, the only thing that helps is washing my hands; it's like some sort of withdrawal symptom, haha. Anyway, even though I've stopped biting, I'm not seeing much actual progress with the nails themselves or the cuticles yet—my nails just look wide and the skin around them is pretty tight. For those of you who quit on your own without using fake nails or gels, when can I actually expect to see some real improvement or healing, and what does that process usually look like? I feel like knowing there's a light at the end of the tunnel would be a huge motivator for me to stay on track. Back when I was biting aggressively, the skin right above my nail used to bleed all the time, and now that they're growing back, there's this empty space under the tip of the nail 😢
I'd really appreciate it if someone could weigh in 🙂
it would definitely help keep me motivated 🙂)

You can usually expect to see some noticeable recovery in about 6 to 8 (maybe up to 12) weeks.
That makes sense, provided you actually stick to it and stay away from the biting (obviously).
Taking a decent quality B-complex vitamin and consistently using a good nourishing cream on your hands and nails will definitely speed things up and help the healing process along.

Hey,
I’ve been struggling with biting my nails for as long as I can remember. Even though I knew how gross the habit was and kept trying to quit, my nails were just too weak—they’d start growing out and then immediately snap or peel. About six months ago, a friend suggested I try the iPhone 8 nail strengthener.
Honestly, this stuff is a lifesaver—you can see a difference in just two or three days, and since the layers build up so much, you can't even bite them anymore. 😁
So, that's my little success story on finally kicking this nasty habit—hopefully, it helps someone else out there too. 🙂

The stuff is like magic because you can actually see the results after just two or three days, and you can't even bite them anymore because those layers of polish make them way too thick to chew through. 😁

That sounds like a solid fix for guys. For women, honestly, getting acrylics is the best move—once you invest that much money into them, you aren't going to want to ruin them, so you stay focused on keeping them intact. Most of the girls I know who deal with nail-biting have solved their problem that way.

Angela Wright said:Honestly, getting gel nails is such a solid move for guys too, but for women, it’s basically a cheat code... once you get them done, you're way too terrified of ruining them to ever bite them again. Most girls I know who struggled with nail biting totally fixed their habit that way.

I am 100% with her on using gel manicures to kick the biting habit.
I haven't gone the gel route in about a year, so I just stick to regular polish now because if my nails aren't painted, they always seem to find their way right into my mouth...🤷
Ever since I stopped doing the gel stuff, I haven't absolutely butchered a single nail, and man, looking back, I actually regret not doing this sooner... I'm finally realizing how much it sucks to have chewed-up nails and how gross that habit really is in the end...

Just a little something to show you what happens when you mess with your nails and bite your cuticles... (it smells like rotten potatoes, 😁 honestly). It’s not even funny anymore because now my entire finger is wrapped in bandages >>. To make matters worse, after they drained the infection, the doctor told me it actually reached the bone. They warned me I could lose the whole finger if I don't watch it.

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions... good luck! 😁

I hope I’m actually in the right subforum here, because honestly, being new to this place, I haven't quite figured out the layout yet. I know there are threads floating around about nails and stuff, but I couldn't find a single direct answer to what I'm looking for, so I figured I'd just start my own thread. Basically, I’ve been a nail biter for as long as I can remember, though maybe just the last two or three years it hasn't been nearly as constant. My nails look pretty bad—they're really wide and sort of awkward. They grow out, sure, but they never seem to sit right against the finger, if that makes sense? They reach a certain length and then just kind of grow out sideways instead of following the shape of my fingertip. I really just want them to look normal, you know, slimmed down and longer. I know women use all those gel treatments and things, but I don't think that's really an option for guys like me, I guess 😁 I even heard some crazy stories about people pulling their nails out entirely so they can regrow them properly without the issues, so I was wondering if anyone here has actually tried something like that or if there’s some other way to fix this 🙂

Talking about pulling nails... 😱 😱 😱

I started biting mine again, too. They’re already getting dangerously close to my knuckles 😢

So yeah, back to square one. Probably for the hundredth time 🙂

I’ve had this terrible habit for a few years now where I constantly bite and pick at my nails, especially the cuticles. It’s gotten to the point where my fingers are always raw and bleeding, and honestly, it looks pretty pathetic... I suspect it might be a byproduct of stress, since I’ve been feeling pretty wound up lately...
Does anyone have advice on how to actually break this cycle?
Thanks

I think you might find those bitter nail lacquers at any local CVS or Walgreens—they’re usually meant for kids to stop them from biting their nails, but they work!
Also, maybe try being more mindful whenever you start picking—just take a second to realize everything you touch might have germs on it.
Honestly, you're basically just licking bacteria off your hands. 😬

If you’re constantly bleeding, you can't just slap a Band-Aid on it and call it a day... that doesn't actually fix anything. You have to figure out why you're getting cut in the first place—like, maybe stay away from the kitchen knives, for starters.

The real move is tackling the root cause by trying to build a life that isn't such a constant stress cooker.
Maybe pick up a hobby to take the edge off—swimming, running, sketching, whatever helps you unwind. And in the meantime, just wear gloves so it's harder to snack on your nails.

I suppose I have the same habit of biting my nails, though it isn't really triggered by anxiety for me; it’s more of a mindless thing I do when I'm bored, like during a long commute to the office or while watching TV.
Anyway, I haven't done it for three days now, simply because I decided to stop after my fingers became incredibly painful from biting them until they bled.

If you guys are looking for a little distraction to help stop the finger biting, check this out:

I think I saw Amazon carrying this thing somewhere, or maybe I just imagined it. I know I saw it listed online... somewhere...

I’m with you on that. Honestly, I think it’s mostly just nerves... between the stress of midterms at State and all the constant bickering going on at home lately, my head is just spinning. It starts with me biting my cuticles, and then I’ll suddenly remember I promised myself I’d stop, but within five minutes, I’m right back at it. It’s just spiraled into one of those bad habits that feels impossible to shake...

Heberden's nodes

That’s exactly what I’m seeing on my fingers.
The problem is I'm basically stuck playing doctor myself because my physician isn't giving me much clarity regarding the connection to lupus... and as for treatment? Am I actually preventing deformity here? It feels like a total dead end.

Not good.

My apologies, I clearly rushed into this thread without fully realizing what it was about...
The post was actually intended for a different group...
Please accept my apologies once again!

Seriously, one of the absolute grossest habits out there.
And man, you have no idea how much nasty stuff you end up swallowing...
Those cheap drugstore polishes don't do squat, at least they didn't work for me.
The only thing that actually saved my life was getting a professional gel manicure.
Ever since I did that, I haven't been able to bring myself to bite them properly. 😁
