So, what decade were you born in? Back in the nineties, the Eurovision Song Contest actually valued the song and the music. Toward the end of the nineties, it started shifting toward those massive stage productions, but they still cared about the melody. By the early 2000s, though? It went completely shallow. I don't know how things were before the nineties, but if you look at the winners or listen to older folks talk about what they watched, you'll see that the actual songwriting used to matter. Nowadays, you've got Italians and French singers performing in English, even though they have some of the most melodic languages on the planet. Basically... it doesn't matter how it sounds, as long as it's flashy enough to blow your mind.
