Hey everyone, I was wondering what would be the best thing to sign up for if I'm looking into self-defense? At the start of this summer, I ended up in a street fight where I managed to take down a much larger
opponent using a right-left cross combo; I’ve actually been training those specific strikes my whole life because they're my favorite, so I've really worked on developing speed... though my straight
punch is probably pretty weak.
Just to be clear, I am never going to be the one to start something out on the street—I have zero interest in fighting unless I'm backed into a corner and forced to defend myself. There are just too many idiots out there these days, so I think it’s
smart to have some martial arts skills under my belt, even if it's just the basics, but my first instinct is always to de-escalate and walk away if I can.
For instance, grappling really scares me. I had an older guy try to show me a few things once—he was a veteran thrower who knew his way around a ring—and while I managed to break free the first time,
the second time I couldn't pull away and he just dragged me backward. I've spent some time watching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tutorials on YouTube to learn how to escape levers and chokes, but honestly, that stuff means nothing until
you actually test it in a real situation. I realized I wouldn't stand a chance without practice, so I'm finally looking to enroll in something, maybe UFC, since hands-on experience is everything.
Thanks! 😉 👍
