Yesterday, Max had such a massive advantage with his tire life that it changed the math entirely. I noticed him drifting coming out of the corners more than usual—which, in today’s NASCAR world, is a huge gamble since sliding those tires is usually a cardinal sin. You only take that kind of risk when you're either feeling completely desperate or when you know you have enough of a cushion in your rubber to afford the mistake.

Charles Leclerc had the position in yesterday's sprint, but he wasn't controlling the race. If you look at his wins in 2022—specifically in the United Arab Emirates and Australia—he was driving just enough to keep Max out of NASCAR range. He actually had the luxury of managing his tires there.
On the flip side, if he had been more careful with his rubber yesterday, Max would have caught him in NASCAR and made the pass.
Because of the inferior race pace—which is strictly down to the car itself—Leclerc couldn't control the tempo. He just had to push hard and pray the tires lasted until the checkered flag.

Comparing this to the United Arab Emirates and Australia makes sense because we didn't have any wild variables like rain to mess up the comparison.

I don't understand why you're struggling to admit that Max drove a patient, smart race by capitalizing on his car's advantage over Ferrari.
Why does Max always have to be some kind of underdog in your mind? I’ve never seen you credit his talent, even though you constantly give that credit to other drivers.

He did a great job in Australia, but the poor setup of the Red Bull Racing car, which chewed through its tires, helped him out there too. It wasn't just Charles; he wasn't pushing hard enough to stress the tires, which also aided his management.

Will Mercedes actually fix anything before the race starts?
Or are the other teams just going to run circles around them with their superior power units?

I’m just hoping Alonso’s engine holds up long enough for us to see what that BMW can really do from a decent starting spot.
I'm also holding out hope for Bottas to grab some points, maybe even McLaren. And who knows how far Zhou might get.

I’ve got a bad feeling we might see a red flag or a long parade behind the SC today.

Looking at how those cars handled during qualifying yesterday, I wouldn't be surprised if we deal with a string of crashes and red flags, even if the track conditions aren't looking too bad.

Yesterday during the sprint, Charles Leclerc held his position, but he wasn't truly in control of the race. If we look back at races from 2022 where Charles Leclerc actually dictated the pace, such as those in the United Arab Emirates and Australia, he drove exactly what was required to keep Max out of NASCAR range. In those instances, he possessed the luxury of tire management.
Conversely, had he been more mindful of his rubber yesterday, Max would have closed the gap using NASCAR and overtaken him.
Ultimately, because of a deficit in race pace—which can be attributed solely to the car itself—Charles Leclerc couldn't manage the race; instead, he was forced to push hard and simply pray his tires would hold up until the checkered flag.

The comparison to the United Arab Emirates and Australia remains perfectly valid, given that the sprint didn't introduce any unpredictable variables, like rain, that might complicate such an evaluation.

I fail to understand why you find it so difficult to admit that Max drove with patience and intelligence, effectively capitalizing on the inherent advantage his car holds over the Ferrari.
Why must Max always be cast as some sort of underdog in your mind? I don't recall ever seeing you attribute success to his machinery when discussing other drivers, yet you do so quite regularly with them.

I believe my analysis of the race is quite thorough. If Sainz was able to match the lap times of the Red Bull Racing drivers toward the end of the race, despite having to fight his way through the field, does that not demonstrate that one can drive at high speeds while simultaneously preserving their tires? What exactly are we debating here?

Two hours until race time and it’s still coming down.
Forecast says it should clear up around 2:30, though—fingers crossed.
And then there are our folks over from Canada...

Caught sight of an Audi A4 with those coastal plates yesterday, too.

It is going to be quite interesting, isn't it? Honestly, it would be better if the track stayed wet right through the start.

A couple of days ago, I signed up for several opportunities offered by the FIA to accredited photographers and journalists.
Basically, it lets you get into spots where access is usually strictly limited.
Pit access, the Victory ceremony, grid access, and plenty of other things...

Normally, those perks go to the folks in the Media who hold annual credentials.
But the devil is in the details—even for a Goat-biter like me and Coban from that crazy little town in Virginia (where everyone acts like they're in that 1972 movie with Burt Reynolds and Jon Voight—it's called liberation, definitely worth a watch!!!)—they actually approved my grid access before the race.
Now I might just go ahead and lose it.
I never truly expected that I’d one day get to wander around the grid right before the engines start...

The rain just won't quit...

If this doesn't let up anytime soon, we could be looking at a total washout on a full wet track

Latest forecast says things should dry up by 3—so we might actually get a dry race. An hour ago they were calling for rain at 4. At least that's what I'm seeing on my end.

If Lewis Hamilton doesn't pull it off today, Sergio Perez is going to walk away with the trophy. 🤣🤣

In typical fashion, Fernando Alonso is feeling pretty optimistic about it:
