I have an American layout. You really should stick to what you're used to; otherwise, switching from other computers becomes a total nightmare because symbols like /, \, +, -, and _ are all in different spots.
When I bought my machine, the retailer actually laser-etched our specific characters onto the right keys for me. It wasn't originally an American layout—it was more similar to a German (QWERTZ) setup—but they customized it.

Plus, if you don't have your standard characters (like those extra accented letters we use), you'll be stuck hunting for them every single time you type. I wouldn't recommend it. Any reputable shop, especially one selling Apple products, should offer keyboard engraving options.
