Ending Guardians of the Galaxy with Rocket Raccoon’s arc was definitely the right call. We’ve seen them run some kind of experiment on him throughout the series, so I guess it wasn't a total shock when the raccoon ended up looking—well, more human.
James Gunn really nailed the emotional beats again here. The way they handled the animal scenes was honestly gut-wrenching—it's just depressing to think there are people out there who actually treat animals that way simply because they have the power to. Giving Rocket that specific backstory felt earned. The ending was solid, too. So, the Guardians are basically down to Rocket Raccoon and Groot now—hopefully we get a few more glimpses of them down the line. Even Nebula came off as somewhat likable, and there’s a lot of very human tension to unpack in her history with Gamora.
On the downside, I’m afraid James Gunn pretty much burned through all his best material back in the first movie. The humor here felt neither original nor particularly clever. It also leans a bit too hard into that pulp/psychedelic vibe—like that sequence at the station with Nathan Fillion. And the soundtrack? It's a bit overbearing (though, let's be real, the music in the first one is still unbeatable). Adam Warlock is fine, I suppose, but he could have used more screen time.
The first installment is still my favorite by far, followed by this third one; the second film was honestly forgettable. All things considered, it's a nice trilogy—provided you watch the infinity rat/Endgame if you actually want to know what happened to Gamora.
