Where did my posts go?

Hey everyone.
I’m actually pretty bummed out after checking my post count. I was well over 2,000 before summer even hit, but now it feels like I'm losing about 10 posts every single day. Right now, I'm sitting at 1,607.
Does anyone have any idea where my posts are disappearing to?

I lost just under two grand yesterday myself, apparently they're clearing out some old threads and chat logs or something. 🙂

From what I can gather, it looks like nobody around here actually goes through and deletes a thread once it's already packed with a ton of posts.

I find this situation quite peculiar myself. I follow a few specific users on Reddit because their perspectives are insightful, so you naturally start to notice their post counts over time. Lately, some have become less active—perhaps their last contribution was months ago—and then you suddenly notice their total number of posts steadily declining.

Is it possible the site is simply archiving older content, or perhaps certain legacy threads are being deleted, causing many users to abruptly lose about ten posts at once?

I also realized some entries are missing for me and a bunch of other guys.
No clue why, either. Even the mods I asked don't have a damn clue. ☕

Man, I think the last time I actually typed anything in here was like 20 days ago 🤷 Now everyone’s just vanishing lately, especially since this whole Reddit site goes dark every single night for "scheduled maintenance."

Confusing, honestly. I figured they'd purge the old threads before touching the new stuff.

I was sitting pretty at 59k, now I'm down to 53k

We have this private Waste sub-section where all the mediocre threads and dead chat logs end up. It’s basically a digital graveyard. Over the last few years, we've piled up over milijuna posts there that nobody ever looks at, yet they still eat up server resources. We're starting to clear them out.

On top of that, there are ancient threads that just don't serve a purpose anymore. Take the IT > Hardware section—there are still tons of threads dating back to 2003. Hardware and Geek Squad are two of the most bloated sections on the entire Reddit. Nobody touches them because they were one-off questions about tech that doesn't even exist anymore.

Don't worry, we aren't deleting anything valuable. Anything with an actual audience stays put. Besides, we have backups just in case.

Also, posts in certain chat sub-sections don't count toward your total post count (like in Off-topic...). It's standard that casual chat shouldn't be counted. But on many other boards, they do count. Most of these chats are being moved to the Archive (where, frankly, they still count every single chat post, which is wrong), so you might see your total post count drop because of the move.

Bottom line: expect your post count to fluctuate occasionally if you mostly hang out in the chat threads. 🙂

So my numbers are gonna land pretty much at zero. 😬

Honestly, I'm kinda bummed I don't spend more time hanging out on the FBI's Reddit.

I am hoping that posts in the "Archive" won't count toward our totals in the future. That would bring our numbers down to a more reasonable level by only counting the "quality" posts we actually write. 😁

It would be a nice way to trick ourselves into thinking we spent less time on Reddit than we actually did, making us feel much more productive. 🎉 At least for some of us. 😁

We might be waiting forever. I’m honestly worried some people might actually have a heart attack if their numbers dropped. 🙂 Suddenly, their whole sense of purpose is under fire.
