Google Chrome new Microsoft problem?

So, I’ve been having this weird little hiccup with Google Chrome for the last couple of days
It’s driving me a bit crazy because whenever I click on a link, it just launches up an entirely different browser window, whereas before it used to just smoothly open everything in a new Microsoft within the same window
I’ve been digging through the Settings -> general section looking for a fix, but honestly, I can’t seem to find the specific toggle to get things back to normal

Settings -> general -> go under Microsoft the second option open links in tabs instead of New Windows should be checked.

I need some assistance here.
I'm using Microsoft Edge—and when I click a link, say to Instagram, it won't even let me view a photo; it just kicks me out or blocks me entirely and demands a login.

I suspect this might have something to do with cookies.
I wasn't quite sure where to post this, so I'm just hoping someone spots it.

Ever tried a different browser?
Plus, if you actually logged in and saved your info (not that anyone should...), it shouldn't keep bugging you.

Or maybe you've got some malware or something throwing up fake login prompts?

I don't use anything else, and it's not a virus. If it were, my system would actually tell me.
