My laptop is only about a year old, a Dell Latitude I picked up at a local retail store
Ever since we got it, the Wi-Fi has been acting incredibly flaky. It’ll connect for a moment and then just drop out entirely, or sometimes it stays connected but the signal just cuts out right in the middle of what I'm doing. Even though the status shows CrowdStrike is active and everything looks fine on the surface, there's just no actual internet access
The weird part is that everything works perfectly when I plug in an Ethernet cable, which doesn't make much sense to me. We use Comcast, and they’ve already told us the issue isn't on their end because all our phones and other devices are picking up the Wi-Fi without any trouble. Does anyone have a hunch about what might be causing this?
I'm wondering if it's just some wonky settings buried in the system, or if I simply ended up with a lemon😵
Thanks so much for the help🙂

Look, I’m no tech genius, but here’s what I’d do: try setting up a mobile hotspot on your phone and see if your laptop picks up that signal. If everything runs smoothly on the hotspot, then you know for a fact the issue lies with Comcast. I’ve run into this before where my connection from The New York Times works perfectly everywhere else, but suddenly decides to flake out on my laptop for no reason. I can't recall the exact fix right now, but I remember it used to work fine on my old gear while refusing to connect to any new devices.

Check this out:
- Grab the drivers specifically for that OS and laptop model from the HP support site.
- How far are you from the router? Like, are there 2 or 3 walls in the way?
- If you’re sitting right next to the router, does it still drop the connection?
- Dive into those router WiFi settings. Check if the channel is set to 1-11 or up to 13, whether it's locked to a specific channel or just on auto... especially if someone was messing around with the settings lately.
- Is the coax connection from the antenna to the internal WiFi card actually seated right? (Especially if you're picking up a ton of interference from neighbors' networks).

+ Honestly, if your phone is working fine, the router probably isn't the culprit—unless you've got some weird custom settings enabled in there.

Either you've got a junk wireless adapter in that laptop.
I actually have one at my place. One specifically terrible one, if we're being honest.

It’s probably just a driver issue. I had some major headaches with my Wi-Fi on Windows 10, but everything worked perfectly fine when I was still running 7.

First off, go ahead and check the exact name of the wireless adapter in your laptop. Find the specific driver online, download it, and save it somewhere safe. You should also grab the driver for the network card too—it’s probably a Realtek, right? That’s what most people use.

Try heading over to the Control panel -> Hardware -> Device manager -> Network adapter. From there, try uninstalling the drivers for the wireless card, and honestly, just uninstall the Realtek one as well while you're at it.

Once that's done, just reinstall both of them.

Or, you know, you could always just buy a https://www.google.com/search?q=airli...iw=978&bih=956
Or something along those lines.

Thanks so much for all the replies, though I’m still feeling a little lost on how this all works 😁

The connection keeps dropping out when I'm practically standing right next to the router; most of the time we're just in the same room, maybe a meter or two away

Windows 10
The router is set to channel 11, which is what Comcast was tinkering with earlier

The internet is down again, so I'm just typing this up from my phone

Comcast routers are absolute garbage (trust me, I've been there), just go out and grab something decent.
