Why do deleted photos keep reappearing?

I’m reaching out to this community because I am at my wit's end and could really use some guidance...
I honestly have no idea what I did to trigger this, but I am being relentlessly haunted by ghost copies of deleted photos on my desktop—specifically those transferred over from my digital camera. It’s like they refuse to stay gone. Does anyone have any insight into why these duplicates keep resurfacing? I would be incredibly grateful for any help.

Look, we're kind of flying blind here since we have no clue what OS you're running. We also don't know which software you used to wipe things, or even what exactly got deleted—was it an entire folder? Individual files? Or just some desktop shortcuts?
