Hey everyone.
I’ve been wrestling with this for two days straight now and I am officially done searching through Google. The issue is my IBM drive; it stubbornly refuses to show up in my computer, even though everything looks perfectly fine in both Device Manager and Disk Management.

All the advice I’ve found online suggests formatting the drive, changing the partition letter, and god knows what else. But formatting isn't an option (as you can see in the screenshot), changing the drive letter did absolutely nothing, and when I tried to manually update the drivers in Device Manager—even though there isn't an error icon next to the IBM drive—it just tells me the drivers are already up to date...

So... I'm asking for help! 😁

(Just so I don't confuse anyone with the screenshot: the part below my Computer Management window is actually just a picture from some website I found online showing where one would supposedly be able to format it 😁 ))

Did you even bother checking the Event Viewer after trying to swap out that drive letter?

From what I can tell, that drive doesn't actually have a drive letter assigned to it (like D:)—it just shows up as the volume name. And since we don't really know what's sitting on that partition... maybe it's part of the system?

I've been messing around with this for two days straight now and I'm officially done searching Google. My IBM drive just refuses to show up in my PC, even though everything looks perfectly fine in Device Manager and Disk Management.

The random advice I found online suggests formatting it, changing the partition letter, or some other nonsense. But formatting isn't working (as you can see in the screenshot), changing the drive letter did absolutely nothing, and when I tried updating the drivers in Device Manager—even though there aren't any error icons next to the IBM drive—it just tells me the drivers are already up to date...

So, yeah... I need help! 😁

Try doing it this way:
just make sure you select the right drive. 🙂

@wiredcyclist82/">@@wiredcyclist82 — I didn't. Honestly, I had no idea about the Event Viewer; none of the tutorials I watched ever even brought it up. 😁

@wearymason4/">@@wearymason4 To be perfectly honest, I have absolutely no clue what’s going on with this drive. It’s been acting up for quite a while now, and frankly, I was under the impression it had finally kicked the bucket. It’s entirely possible the OS is just corrupted, because if I recall correctly, my current C: drive was only installed as a quick fix after this one stopped behaving.

The day before yesterday, I was putting together a new PC and migrated my existing IBM (my primary C: drive) over, along with this one—though, let's face it, moving this second drive felt pretty much pointless at this stage. I can't bring myself to toss it, though; even if it is dead, maybe it'll miraculously recover when the stars align.
So, I was genuinely caught off guard when I actually saw it showing up in Device Manager. 😁

I'm going to give that method goldenviper13 linked a shot. I actually have a USB stick running into the exact same issues as the IBM, so it'll be good practice. 😁

Thanks, everyone. I'll let you know how it goes.

...why overthink it? you just gotta assign a drive letter"

when she was formatting, she only gave it a volume label instead of assigning it to the D: drive

The tool is pretty straightforward. You just pick an action and run it. That's it.

On your screen, that first bolded option labeled "Change Drive Letter and Path..." should have this little box with a letter and a dropdown menu where you can pick from the available letters. First, you gotta pick the actual drive. Go into that setting, select something like D if it’s available, and hit confirm. I'm pretty sure you'll need to reboot after that...

Thanks for the advice, but I’m still stuck on which option to actually pick.
Besides, looking at this software, there isn't even an OS on the drive—just a massive pile of movies, series, and various other junk. It wouldn't be a huge loss if I ended up having to format it anyway.

Anyway, fine, I’ve gone ahead and used Change Drive Letter and Path, and now I’m going to reboot the PC to see if any of this actually works.

Another "label" issue 😢 but look, I’m telling you, that’s just the drive name. Your C: drive doesn't even have it, and honestly, you don't need it anyway.
What you actually need to do is go in and "assign" a "LETTER" to that specific drive so it actually shows up.

Look, you can keep repeating yourself all day long, but if those options aren't appearing on my screen, they aren't appearing. 😁
I would genuinely appreciate it if someone could just tell me how to actually get this done.

Oh, wow—I actually did it! I’d give anything to have known this sooner, but I suppose I was being a bit clueless. 😁
For the tech-illiterate among us:
Administrative Tools
Computer Management
Disk Management
Right-click the drive, select "Change Drive Letter and Paths," then hit "Add."

Thanks, everyone!

I've been banging my head against the wall for two days straight now and honestly, I'm about ready to just give up on Googling this mess. The issue is with my IBM drive—it just refuses to show up in my computer, even though it looks perfectly fine and totally normal in both Device Manager and Disk Management.

All those generic tips online are telling me to try formatting it, or changing the drive letter, or God knows what else. But formatting isn't even an option (you can see that in my screenshot), and changing the drive letter did absolutely nothing, and when I tried to manually update the drivers in Device Manager—even though there isn't even a little yellow warning icon next to the IBM drive—it just tells me everything is working perfectly fine...

So, yeah... please, someone help me! 😁

(And don't let the screenshot confuse you, the stuff under my Computer Management is actually just some image I found on a random website showing where you're supposed to be able to format things 😁 )

I didn't want to start a whole new thread, so please just give me some advice here.
What I did was pull the drive out of my laptop and popped it into an external enclosure. I plugged it into a different computer, but now I have no clue how to actually get to the folders that were sitting on my old laptop's desktop. Those files should be somewhere on the IBM drive, right?

Wouldn't you just see it pop up in My Computer once you plug it in, just like any other USB drive?
I'm going to need a few more details here—was the drive actually malfunctioning, which is why you decided to hook it up in the first place?
It’s possible the issue lies with the external enclosure itself. If the drive is actually functional, maybe try giving the PC a quick restart while it's still connected to see if that clears anything up.
