Windows 8.1 won't boot

So, I ran into some error in an app, and since those things tend to hang sometimes—where even killing them via Task Manager does nothing because the whole system just freezes up...—I decided to just restart the PC. But when I booted back up, I got stuck with

It doesn't actually find any errors or anything... it just sits there giving me options to either restart again or dive into advanced options. So, I go into advanced, trying to get into Safe Mode, but it just loops right back to that same

Anyway, dropping some more info here after sitting on this for a few hours

I plugged in a Windows 8.1 USB drive I downloaded earlier today and ran

chkdsk /r

That took nearly two hours because I have a massive amount of data on here

And then I also

ran
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /rebuildbcd

And after all that, turns out none of it helped at all

I could technically perform a Hard reset, but I really don't want to... I have this one specific application that’s a nightmare to reinstall because I need a separate license key. It's hard to explain, but it's a farming app that manages the feeder systems. Reinstalling is such a headache because
First, once the software is installed, I have to call a technician who takes a code generated by the app, sends it to corporate, and then we have to wait five days or even longer just to get the activation code back. On top of that, you have to manually configure the app so it talks to the feeder hardware... it's a total mess.

That's why I'm trying to fix the OS specifically where the error is. I need to know how to repair the bootloader or whatever is glitching out.
Is there any way to use commands to just refresh the bootloader without touching everything else???

Any help would be appreciated... I'm honestly getting pretty desperate and Google isn't helping much. All I've found so far is chkdsk and those bootrec commands.

System restore is out of the question too, since I never had a restore point enabled... that option was turned off.

I can't even get into Safe Mode... it just keeps kicking me right back into Repair Mode every single time.

What if you just tried running a Windows repair? If that doesn't do the trick, I'm thinking you might be looking at a full drive format and a fresh installation of Windows.

Man, I’m dealing with the exact same headache.

Every time I try to run a repair, the whole thing just hangs halfway through and spits out an error saying it failed. Total disaster.

So, like a complete idiot, I’ve been sitting here thinking maybe my only move is to track down some Windows 8 installation media on a USB or a disc from someone... I guess that's the only way out of this mess.

Is there actually a simpler way to fix this without all the extra hassle?

Grab a Windows 8 ISO from a torrent site and run a repair—you could use Rufus to whip up a bootable USB drive, or just burn the ISO onto a blank DVD if you're feeling old school, then fire up the repair process.

Thanks, that’s what I was thinking too—and yeah, I definitely need to get that done so I actually have it ready when things go south.

Somehow, against all odds, the thing actually kicked in. I was messing around in the BIOS—honestly, I have zero clue what I was even doing—toggling stuff back and forth between Windows 7 and Windows 8 settings, just sitting there staring at it until it finally hit where it needed to be.

Anyway, long story short, I have no idea what magic I performed, but it's working now.

When I went to download Windows 8.1, it gave me the option to pick my language, then asked what media I wanted—I picked the USB drive, plugged it in, and it started mounting and downloading immediately.

To me, getting it directly from their official page feels way safer than grabbing some random torrent. You never know if someone tucked a virus or some other junk into those files. It didn't even ask me about a license key, either. My PC already has an original one, but the installer didn't even prompt me during the download process.

Not everyone has easy access to Microsoft's official pages 🙂 You’re probably one of those students who can snag an account through school and download Windows whenever you want for free—I get it. As for torrenting, hey, you have every right to do that, as long as you aren't just grabbing any random file. You've got to stick to reliable uploaders who don't bundle a bunch of junk software into the installation, right?
