Setting: Rural America

I honestly feel like movies set in rural America have this unique charm and vibe—it’s that specific landscape, especially those vast stretches down in the South. They just look so compelling on screen, right? And lately, even shows like Rectify, True Detective, and Treme seem to be leaning harder into that Deep South setting.

Which movie sticks in your mind because of that small-town scenery? You know, the kind that really adds to the whole mood or atmosphere?

It would also be cool to see where they were filmed, maybe even with a photo.

For me, one of the first ones that totally hooked me with its sense of place was What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

Plus, I always find myself jumping over to IMDb to check out the filming locations, whether they're out in the sticks or in the big cities.

Badlands is one of my favorites because it really captures how being stuck in a small town shapes who you become.

I'm not sure if you feel the same way, but I’d put Nebraska in that same category. It’s got those moments that just scream small-town life—like that scene in the diner, or when he goes to visit his brother.

Nebraska immediately comes to mind. It’s got that small-town vibe in every sense of the word.🍿

A local dive bar where they’re playing nothing but classic country hits
Some guy walks up to me, and honestly, I was thrilled to see Ante 😁

I have always had a particular fondness for films set in backwoods environments.

I have to say,
*Cop Car* really captured that specific atmosphere quite effectively—it reminded me a lot of the vibe you get in *Prisoners*, *Thin Ice*, or even *Red Hill*.
If you look back at the classics, you’ve got stuff like *Clay Pigeons*, *U Turn*, *Stand by Me*, *Of Mice and Men*, or *Boys Don't Cry*...
It seems like most of King's novels are rooted in that exact kind of setting.

If my memory serves me right, the entire plot takes place deep in the woods or somewhere right on the edge of a forest.

Nebraska was my first thought too. And maybe Paper Moon. Both are black and white.

It’s a heavy film about the loss of innocence and being forced to grow up far too soon. Set on a farm in Idah.
