So, here is my situation: I have Windows XP on an external hard drive, and that’s it. I’m currently out at sea, and I’ll only have internet access for another three or four days. Given my current bandwidth, downloading a modern Windows installer is out of the question. If I were to pick up a new laptop, is there any chance XP would actually run on hardware designed specifically for the latest Windows versions?
This might sound like a naive question, but I’d rather not invest in a new laptop only to find it won't even boot. I'm on a tight schedule here, so a quick answer would be appreciated.

Honestly, just grab yourself a Linux distro. Maybe try Mint or even Ubuntu if you want to keep things simple.

What’s even the point of running Windows XP off an external drive? Like, seriously, if you want that, just go buy a laptop that comes pre-installed with Windows and be done with it.

I have an opportunity to pick up a laptop at a great price, but it doesn't come with Windows installed. I was considering running Windows directly from an external drive, but I am questioning whether it will actually function properly on modern hardware.

I'm not so sure. How are you even planning to run the setup? Your installation media has to be bootable. Unless you have another PC handy to burn a Windows XP CD or prep a USB drive... if you can pull that off, the setup might actually go through and the laptop might come back to life. You'll get the keyboard working, sure. But the touchpad? I wouldn't count on it. Graphics, internet, sound, ports—it all depends on whether Windows XP can actually handle the drivers. If it manages to pick up the network card using some generic driver and pulls patches from Windows Update, you might be in business. The real question is whether it’ll even recognize the hardware, and if there's a generic driver out there that works with the Windows base... Because honestly, if the touchpad doesn't work, there's zero point in messing around with just the arrow keys. 😬 I mean, you could do it, but it's a massive pain... Or, if you have one lying around (or buy a cheap USB mouse), the issue is finding one that actually plays nice with XP. It needs to explicitly say it supports XP, or you'll have to hunt down some old relic from a junk drawer...

Anyway, I'm predicting a ton of work and a major headache if you even manage to get this thing running at all...

Exactly... those are precisely the kinds of hurdles I was worried about. Given my limited resources and spotty internet connection, buying a laptop without an OS would probably be a mistake. Thanks for the insight, darkowl72. 👍

Exactly, and besides what darkowl72 mentioned regarding certain laptops simply refusing to let you install older versions of Windows, they’ll just shut you down right at the start of the installation process and insist that you're required to use the latest version instead.
