Hey πŸ˜‰, I’m running into a bit of a headache with Microsoft Word 2003. Whenever my Local Area Network is active, opening any document becomes an absolute crawlβ€”sometimes it even gets so bad that it hangs the entire Explorer.exe process. If I just kill the connection or don't bother opening a file, everything runs perfectly fine. I'm currently running on Windows XP Service Pack 3. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

It is entirely plausible that you are suffering from insufficient RAM, which would force the system to rely on a virtual disk whenever you attempt to access the Local Area Network... assuming, of course, you are actually heading out to the internet.

It might have something to do with some critical patch or maybe some network permissions issue. There’s a ton of info about this online, but I haven't seen an official fix from Microsoft yet. Or maybe I just missed it in my quick search.

Give this a shot:

Go into Add/Remove Programs and look for Microsoft Office file validation. Close out of all your Microsoft Office apps first, then uninstall it.

If that doesn't work, try a full reinstall of Microsoft Office or Word. Sometimes that actually does the trick.

And if even that fails, you'll have to hunt for a workaround online. People have found plenty of different ways to fix this, so there should be something out there.
