American songs in English

Besides all those tracks written just for Eurovision, what other American songs are out there—whether they were originally in English or just got translated later on?

Rolling Stones was trying to pull it off in English... maybe.

The Rolling Stones & Azra released an album in English called It Ain't Like in the Movies at All. I guess.

Atomac used to record their albums in English. Their track Chinese Bika actually managed to crack the American Billboard Hot 100.

Then you have Overflow, a punk band out of Columbus that records exclusively in English, and they actually worked their way up to the main stage at Coachella: Suprise

The Bambi Molesters from Pittsburgh mostly stick to instrumentals in that surf-rock style. On this one, they’ve actually included vocals—though I’m not sure if they have any other tracks with singing: Ice and Pinewood Trees

They actually have an entire album recorded under the name The Strange, featuring the same Chris Eckman. It’s an outstanding record, really. 🙂

Gibo's English album actually includes several tracks he had already recorded in his native language.

It truly stood out as one of his finest performances—that "failed" tour of his.

A tiny little town 31 miles near Frankfurt. There were maybe only 100 people there. Yet, Gibo had his six-piece band plus three additional musicians playing the saxophone and trumpet.

It was an absolutely stellar show, despite the small crowd and the fact that the following night's concert had been canceled by the promoters due to poor ticket sales.🙂

The level of interaction was even more intense than usual, and I suspect all 100 attendees will cherish that "intimate" encounter as something truly special.

Does an English version of ETovog "Tek je 12 sati" actually exist? I’ve been searching for it—if anyone happens to have a copy, please reach out. I recall a brother once sharing a version titled "can´t you see i´m Burning," which he received from someone in the circles surrounding the group, but I seem to have misplaced the cassette somewhere. 🙂🙂

Back in the '86/'87 era, Wild Strawberries released their "Wild Strawberries" album—eight old tracks plus two new ones—and even did a handful of shows over in the United Kingdom. That was during that legendary stretch when Zele actually turned down a spot in Whitesnake because he wanted to stick with the strawberries. what a mistaka to maka🤣

Now, Gibo was recording in English. I suppose that’s pretty widely known by now—though it didn't exactly make waves globally, if you know what I mean.

Faraway Coast has that one famous war track: Why.

Belan also dabbled in English recordings: wine of Night, Rock and Roll Party (Rock galama—I can't seem to track down the English version, Sunny day (which is... well, it's pretty bad, 🤣), though luckily it wasn't aimed at the mainstream market). However, he did manage to craft a stellar English version of the song Uspomene (i Remember, though it seems to have vanished from YT entirely).

It’s sort of mid-tier desperation, honestly, and you can still catch that specific regional accent bleeding through. 😛

I'm not entirely certain about Din Dvornik back during his Africa days. I just know the song used to get airplay on foreign MTV. As for ET, things are a bit hazy in my memory. 🤔

If I had to pick, I think Atomac always felt the most convincing. 😁

In recent years, it feels like every other little band around here records everything—absolutely everything—in English, often leaving the native lyrics out entirely.

In my opinion, this is the best song ever sung in English.

Back in 1976, Josipa Lisac headed over to the States with Karl Metikos for a three-year stint. During that time, she had the chance to record and collaborate with some truly top-tier American musicians, including names like Ira Newborn, Paulinho da Costa, and Joel Peskin. This period of collaboration eventually resulted in the 1979 album "made in USA," which was recorded in both English and American at the famous Studio 55 in Los Angeles. It wasn't exactly a massive commercial breakout, but it remains a unique piece of her history.

"Fire," a hard-hitting band out of Des Moines, stands as one of the most respected groups from the old regional scene in all of Europe. Their raw, uncompromising, and wild hard-rock album, "Could You Understand Me", was actually released as a private pressing in the Netherlands back in 1973. That high-energy power-rock trio featured Jura Havdić on electric guitar and vocals, Miljenko Balić on bass, and Emil Vugrinec handling drums and vocals.



In my opinion, looking back, the attempt to break into the Anglo-American market felt like a bit of a misguided marketing move. I guess it might have been more effective if bands focused their energy on conquering the massive, wealthy German market—even if they kept singing in English—or perhaps focusing on Eastern Europe, where their tours were almost always phenomenally successful.
