...I’m looking for some hope here. Does anyone know of a simulator, an emulator, or perhaps some other workaround to get certain critical programs running? They worked flawlessly on Windows XP, but now that I’ve moved to a newer machine running Windows 7, they simply won't launch. A colleague mentioned they aren't compatible with Windows 7, which is frustrating. These tools are vital for my vehicle maintenance work—and honestly, for helping out my dad with his car too—but there's no commercial gain involved here. I'd truly appreciate any ideas or advice you might have.

Right-click the program icon and select Properties. Navigate to the Compatibility tab, where you will find the option to "run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP."
Check that box, save your changes, and then try launching it...

Hold on, let me finish the installation first, then I'll right-click the program icon and dive into properties... I'm away from my desk at the moment, so I'll give it a shot tomorrow if I can find the time—fingers crossed! Does that actually work for you, by the way?

Of course it works... especially when I'm running older games.
Basically, you install the software like usual, then launch it using the method I mentioned above. Right-click the program icon, go to properties, select compatibility, and check the box to run in compatibility mode for Windows XP sp3. Hit apply and okay.
That should do it...

...Alright, thanks. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes. If it actually works, the first round of drinks is on me next time you're in town here in the States!

...Look, man, these programs shouldn't have any business accessing the internet. How do I go about blocking them? Does the Windows firewall actually offer that kind of control—something where I can still run the software, but ensure it has zero communication outside my machine while I'm connected to Wi-Fi?

There's a bit of everything here
Windows 7

You could also try using a dedicated firewall program to handle this more precisely—maybe some solid antivirus suite, like Kaspersky...

Wait, what? Is an app really not allowed to hit the web unless it knows you're a registered user?

error7: Hardlock not found!

It doesn't matter which compatibility mode I toggle... it’s just not working. Typical.

Are you running 64-bit Windows?
By the way, are you perhaps attempting to run SAP...
