Hey there! I just picked up a new PC yesterday. Every time I try to boot it up, I get this error message: REBOOT AND SELECT PROPER BOOT DEVICE OR INSERT BOOT MEDIA AND PRESS A KEY

It sounds like you bought a machine without an OS installed, or at least that's what the error is telling you. If you already popped in a disc to install it and you're still seeing this, you probably just need to head into the BIOS and make sure the CD/DVD drive is set as one of the boot options...
You didn't give us much to work with here...

So, what’d you pick up and where from? Does it come with Windows installed? You can't just barge in here asking for help without giving any details—it's kind of like calling 911 to scream about a fire without telling them where the house is.

Haha, this one is a classic fadedorca66
Hey friend, if you could just drop a few more details, I might actually be able to help you out.

Of course you're getting that error—you haven't even got an OS installed yet. I guess you need to get Windows set up first before you can actually do anything with it. You got a Windows installation disc or something?

From what I can tell, you're working with a relatively new machine—even if you didn't specify the motherboard manufacturer or model, I can see from the processor that it's an LGA 1150 socket. Anyway, I don't want to make this more complicated than it needs to be, but you should be able to install Windows XP on that computer without having to mess with any custom modifications—like manually injecting those hard drive chipset drivers into the installation media—but it seems like you might be a bit out of your depth here. Honestly? The easiest path is just to grab Windows 7 or maybe Windows 8/8.1. Just find a friend or a neighbor who knows their way around a PC, offer them a beer, and you'll have the whole thing sorted out in no time.

It’s kind of a waste to put XP on that new rig. I guess you should just grab Windows 7 (or maybe even 8 if you really want to) and throw it on a USB drive to install instead.

Duh, obviously. A computer's basically just a paperweight without an OS; you'd just be staring at that error message all day. 😬

I honestly don't get how they didn't mention at the shop—or the repair center, for that matter—that you'd have to handle the Windows installation yourself.

So, did you just let him download windows from that link? And do you actually know how to burn an ISO file?

It’s probably because it was bought at one of those discount shops where you pick up some deli meat and a vacuum bag and just grab a computer while you're at it.😁
