Is it actually possible for animated feature films with American dubbing to have a shorter runtime than the original English versions? Or are they just straight-up shorter overall?
I was planning on sitting down with the kids to watch a few movies, but the versions available with the local dubbing always seem to have worse visual quality than the English 1080p versions I found. I figured I’d just overlay the American audio onto the high-def files, but the runtimes don't line up at all. It's driving me crazy.

The reason for that is because the original Blu-ray releases run at 23.976 fps, while our DVDs here in the States (and most PAL formats used overseas) run at 25 fps. This basically means the DVD versions are "shorter" because they speed up the footage from 23.976 to 25. For instance, if a movie lasts 2 hours and 1 minute at 23.976 fps, it’ll only be about 1 hour and 56 minutes at 25 fps. To get the audio to line up properly, you have to "slow it down" from 25 back to 23.976. There are different programs you can use to handle this, like Megui, but even then, you aren't guaranteed a perfect result—you'll likely still need to apply some manual audio delay to get everything in sync perfectly.
