We’re looking at a pretty universal narrative here—the classic tale of a criminal’s meteoric rise and inevitable downfall. Even if they don't end up directly lifting the stylistic beats or the core plot from de palmin's work, or even the much older Scarface, there seems to be enough substance there to allow for some genuine originality. On the other hand, isn't it perfectly obvious why they chose to market it specifically as Scarface, rather than treating it as its own standalone biopic about a gangster's life?

It wouldn't really work if we were talking about some Cuban immigrant named Tony Montana... I mean, then the whole thing would just be trash.
But honestly, it’s a universal story at its core.
Back in the 1932 version directed by Howard Hawks, the character was actually Italian—his name was Antonio "Tony" Camonte.

A modern-day Scarface could easily be about a Russian or a Mexican...

Mexos is on the move, currently based out of L.A.

though a Russian operative paired with New York strikes me as a far more compelling combination.

If they’re going to remake Scarface, the lead has to be Mexican. If the cast and crew actually pull their weight, you could end up with a killer movie. A Russian or a Mexican just wouldn't hit the same way as a Mexican character—someone who crosses into the USA illegally, works the plantations, and then climbs the ladder through the drug trade. That’s how you make it work.

I honestly feel like anyone who claims movies were peak up until the year 2000 and everything after that is just absolute garbage would probably have the exact same attitude if we were living in, say, 1974 instead of 2014. They’d just be sitting there complaining that movies were great until the '70s and then suddenly everything became total trash and a complete joke, right?

+ Paul Munuti and Al Pacino were both in their early 40s when they filmed their versions of Scarface, and Javier is right at that same age. 🙂
