Well, I just got back from a three-day ban, and honestly, I was feeling quite energized and ready to tear into some gender-skeptics on one of those endless flame wars.

But alas, the entire damn site has been down all day. 🙂

I’d suggest you people set up a PayPal account or something so we can toss a few bucks toward fixing this pathetic excuse for a server. Personally, I’d be more than happy to chip in, and I suspect I’m not the only one feeling this way.

Calling a completely commercial, private network hub a "humanitarian initiative" is nothing short of an ironic oxymoron.

Look, AT&T saw their revenues take a massive dive in the second quarter—so, what then? Should we organize a humanitarian drive for them too?

Oh, absolutely! Because when you're playing the slots, dropping a chip in is just a simple matter of bread and circuses.😂🤣

Word on the street is they aren't making a dime, and they can barely cover the costs of keeping the servers running.🤷

There was actually a thread about this recently, where one Redditor suggested we implement a VIP tier tied to a monthly subscription fee.

Honestly, if an entrepreneur claims their business "isn't turning a profit," maybe—just maybe—they should take a hard look in the mirror and figure out where they went wrong, rather than looking to charity drives to bail them out.

So, what does that actually mean? Are they planning to roll out a subscription model, similar to how Discord handles things?

Honestly, I’d be more than willing to chip in a few bucks if it meant this server wouldn't crash every five minutes.

Are you seriously expecting me to just sit here and provide a free deep dive into what should be done—out of pure, unadulterated altruism—when we're living in a reality where the site admins are constantly telling everyone to go install AdBlock? Not to mention, they seem to think the loss of old-school users doesn't even matter because they’ll just be replaced by new, more numerous, more active, and—let's be honest—more click-happy users?

What is even the point of giving advice to a system that constantly insists everything is perfectly fine and running smoothly?

If the big bosses actually showed they cared about this forum as much as they care about that black ink on their balance sheets, I’d say it might not be such a bad idea. But honestly? Right now, I’d think anyone willing to drop a single dollar on something like that was an idiot.

What does "showing interest" actually look like here? What would you expect him to do differently than what he's doing right now?

Frankly, I don't get this constant need to summon the boss. Does someone really need a supervisor breathing down their neck just to get things done?

This site is run by a crowd of adults. A massive group. Tons of people.

You can accomplish pretty much anything without the owner—except maybe buying a new server. And let's face it, that server is always on the verge of dying just to force us to finally read that book we've been putting off for weeks or to make us go outside for once. Who cares if the site goes down for a day because the owner missed a payment.

What have you all actually contributed to this place on the days the server was running perfectly fine?

Well, sure—we can handle some minor technical tweaks. But there's no way we can ensure this Reddit site actually gets a server capable of keeping things stable for the users. And don't even get me started on updated software. There's plenty more where that came from.

I’m pretty much convinced the admins have some kind of panic button they just hit whenever they get tired of dealing with us, or when it gets too hot outside, or maybe during the holidays... or whenever they find themselves facing a pile of questions they can't answer and whatever else, so I don't think any amount of charity work is going to change their minds..

Exactly. And once the forum is back online, all our problems will just vanish—everyone's suddenly best friends, showering each other with compliments and handing out roses and honey cakes like it's nothing.

oh wait...

Give me a break, because realizing that things aren't magically going to fix themselves isn't quite the same thing as trying to ignore them or running away from reality. :-D

Oh, right...

I still don't grasp why the owner needs to be "involved" for fundraising to suddenly become a viable idea.

What does it mean for an owner to show interest? Should they be posting on Reddit? Moderating? Why? What difference does it make? Does the server run any faster because of it?

The hardware remains the same. The only real change is that some people might feel like they’re being coddled—is that what you're looking for, Anthony Jackson2?

So, if the boss pops in occasionally to ask, "How are you doing, dear Anthony Jackson2?"—that's supposed to motivate people to donate for a new server?

When that whole thing about the AdBlock suggestion came up, I kind of got the impression that this forum only exists because of momentum, and it'll probably just keep rolling along until it eventually collapses under its own weight. I suppose they probably back up the database regularly and that's about it. Maybe the owner isn't totally indifferent, but perhaps they've just left the entire vision of the site up to the administration, so maybe some fresh initiative would actually be a good thing? If someone from management could provide a coherent explanation of where and how the money would be spent, I guess I wouldn't be against a subscription or a fee!

I’m suggesting you guys just put out a PayPal link or some bank info so we can toss a few bucks toward this pathetic excuse for a server. I’d gladly chip in, and honestly, I bet plenty of others feel the same way.

I’m all for it.
A voluntary donation sounds fine by me. I’d be willing to cough up some cash just to keep this place running, even without any fancy premium membership crap.

Not that I care if some guy who used to act like he owned the place via his avatar thinks I’m an idiot for doing it. ☕

I check this site every single day, even though it isn't half as lively or interesting as it used to be.
It sucks seeing it go downhill like this.

Just give us a way to pay—you've got nothing left to lose anyway.

Given how these options were laid out, I am honestly praying to every god in existence that the owner is simply uninterested.
