Why are 50-cent coins so unreliable for coffee machines?

so eventually I just started carrying a thermos of coffee with me and calling it a day☕

So I tried dropping a fifty in earlier and the machine just spat it right back at me, which was super annoying, but then I tried that trick you guys mentioned where you basically rub the bill against the machine and it actually worked, it took it immediately 😁
Honestly, this hack totally works even though the whole situation feels pretty ridiculous 😁

Heh, I guess the machines haven't been fully patched up yet to stop that little workaround from working... lucky us.

In any case, speaking from my own experience, these vending machines almost always accept nickels, yet they consistently reject nickels minted in two specific years—2007 and 2011. And let’s be clear: those "helpful" little tips about rubbing the coin against your jeans are utterly useless.

So, the next time you find yourself struggling with a nickel after three or four failed attempts, take a moment to check the mint year. You can hold me personally accountable if it isn't 2007 or 2011. If it turns out to be one of those two, well, you're simply out of luck; you might as well go hunt down a different nickel from a different year.

I haven't quite figured out what makes those specific coins so problematic just yet, but I shall eventually uncover the truth.🙂

You basically just gotta slam it hard from the inside—like, you wedge it right against the edge of the opening and just "crack" it with everything you've got, then it'll pop right through those little internal gates in the machine

Or sometimes even that won't work, and you just end up totally wrecking the damn thing like this🙂

Not at all, it was more like an old Western tradition. 🤷

It was mostly about using dollars back then. When you went shopping, those specific coins they used were actually compatible with the vending machines.

A vast array of items could be repurposed here, provided they meet the necessary requirements regarding dimensions and weight 😁

at least until the boss loses his patience and decides to pull the plug on the whole machine 😢

I honestly don't know how much more I can possibly learn from this mess 🙂
