Is it just me, or are men being discriminated against at Walmart (and other stores)?

Look, my routine is pretty simple: I usually just bring a backpack to store whatever groceries I pick up. But lately, I’ve run into this annoying situation where the cashiers stop me and demand to check the bag, claiming backpacks aren't allowed inside. Meanwhile, I see women walking in with massive handbags or even huge totes without anyone batting an eye or questioning them once. When I actually called out the cashier on this double standard, she just gave me some vague excuse about how those are "personal women's bags." It really feels like they view every man walking through the doors as a potential shoplifter, while women get a free pass to carry whatever they want.

The issue isn't the bag or the backpack itself.

Sure they exist, which makes this whole thing even more bizarre and useless. Honestly, it feels like it was cooked up just to humiliate men.

Just toss your backpack in the locker by the entrance, then grab it once you're done shopping.

And why isn't this an option for women? Handbags take up just as much space as a backpack—honestly, some are even bigger, and half the people walking in are carrying massive totes anyway. Besides, if I ditch my bag, where am I supposed to put my stuff?

Look, I personally leave my bag behind just to dodge those annoying bag checks. You can always carry your items in your hands, a basket, a cart, or even a plastic bag, then just toss them into your purse on the way out. I’m not saying it’s right that you get hassled constantly, but most stores have signs at the entrance stating that bags belong in the lockers. Shoplifting has spiked lately—especially things like chocolate, perfume, makeup, seasonings, sausages... and retailers are going to do everything in their power to keep those losses to a minimum. For instance, if you walk into a Forest store wearing a backpack, they might not even let you through the door.

First off, trying to carry everything in your hands is just plain impractical if you're actually buying more than a couple of things. And honestly, I never bother buying their overpriced plastic bags anyway. Besides, women walk into grocery stores with purses all the time and I rarely see anyone making a scene about it. Where would everyone even put their bags if we all checked them? It would create a massive bottleneck. From what I've seen, there's definitely a double standard when it comes to how they treat ladies' handbags versus backpacks.
Then there's the fact that stores are already crawling with cameras, security guards, and those exit sensors, so I don't really see much room for anyone to pull off a heist anyway.

There is certainly some truth to your point, as I remember walking in with my backpack and didn't encounter a single security check or any suspicious glances.
When you reach the entrance, simply inform them that you intend to bring your own bag because you are committed to reducing plastic waste, and that you'll be using it to carry your purchases. 🤷
