It looks like I hit the jackpot with this lip deformity that affects about one in every 12,000 kids 😍. Mostly, I’m just wondering if anyone here deals with something similar. Or maybe you know someone who went through surgery to fix it? I'd really like to know what the cost was like. Hopefully, one of those one-in-a-million people out there can weigh in on this πŸ˜‰.

I was wondering if anyone here has ever had any dealings with Microtium ears, or perhaps run into them before?
Thanks

So, here’s the deal: microtia is a condition that really needs surgical intervention. There are basically two main techniques out there, though the tricky part about these kinds of procedures is that they usually happen in several stages. You have the Brentwood methodβ€”which is pretty standard over in the USAβ€”that involves four separate stages. However, these days, the Nagata technique is becoming much more common, and it only requires two stages.
Right now, if you're looking for the top surgeons in this field, you'd look toward experts like Professor Siegert and Dr. Magritz in Germany.

When it comes to reconstruction, some doctors use rib cartilage, while others opt for synthetic materials like Medpor. That said, studies have shown that using Medpor can lead to higher rates of rejection and infectionβ€”so, naturally, most surgeons prefer using actual cartilage. Generally speaking, kids shouldn't undergo the surgery until they're at least 10 or 11 years old.
