It would probably be pretty embarrassing to just show up out of nowhere and ask them to, you know, fix my nose for no apparent reason. 😁

To be honest, I’d be nervous about a private clinic too. A hospital is a hospital, and doctors there deal with much more serious cases than those at private practices, so they might be more experienced.
And look... I've heard that plenty of people have a deviated septum without even realizing it. For instance, until about three years ago, I never imagined I had any breathing problems, until the headaches started. I didn't even suspect a deviation could be the cause πŸ™‚β€”I thought it was just sinus inflammation or somethingβ€”but the doctor saw it immediately and said surgery was the only way to fix it.
So, turns out I have a left-sided deviation, an empty columella, and a few other things, plus a hump. 😁
You don't really have anything to lose. Just go for the exam and see what happens; you might actually have a deviation. 😁 😁

Honestly, I’ve heard that so many people are walking around with a deviated septum without even realizing it. Take me, for exampleβ€”up until about three years ago, I never once thought I had any breathing issues. Then the headaches started hitting me, and I guess I never even suspected that a deviation like THAT could be the actual cause. πŸ™‚I honestly thought I was just dealing with a sinus infection or something similar, but the doctor took one look at me and said right away that surgery is the only way to fix this.
So, I've got a leftward deviation, an empty columella, and a whole bunch of other issuesβ€”plus a hump. 😁
You’ve got nothing to lose. Just go get checked out. Even if everything turns out to be fine, you might actually have a deviated septum or something. Just go. 😁 😁

unknown, man, what an absolute adventure I've been having. πŸ˜‚
I honestly doubt I have any issues at all, but I guess it’s worth checking out just to be sure. 😁
Thanks, and good luck with the surgery! Once you're back on your feet and feeling a bit better, I definitely want to hear all about itβ€”give me all the details! 😁 πŸ‘‹

Does anyone know what the damage is for this surgery? I'm looking for the lowest price possibleβ€”you know, the sweet spot where it’s budget-friendly but I can still trust them to actually do a decent job.

Betty Edwards22 - What does a private provider have to do with Medicare if you aren't using a referral? I honestly don't see how I've "taken" anything from anyone by paying out of pocket for a private specialistβ€”and I certainly don't see why I should feel any sense of guilt about it.

There is a rhinoplasty deal on Groupon for $2000, maybe at some local clinic or something.. I haven't heard of them personally, but I guess you should look into it.. They might be alright, I suppose. πŸ™‚

For sure! 😁
Feel free to hang out here for a day or two before your surgery if you're feeling super anxiousβ€”it might help to just vent a little. πŸ™‚

If you look at which post I'm actually responding to, you'll see I was addressing your point about ignoring shame and things like that, which feels even more morally questionable to me. I’m not one to go around calling people out, but if someone pulls my leg, I think it's perfectly fine to speak my mind and share my perspective.

Hey everyone!
I’m actually heading in for nose surgery in a few days with my surgeon. The consultation was greatβ€”really straightforward, no sugarcoating, and they seem super easy to talk to, so I’m feeling pretty good about everything. Wish me luck! πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„πŸ™„

Well, you've got a pretty fitting username. I’m also dying to know how this turns out, so please keep us posted 😁
I've heard all sorts of things about that clinic, so I'm honestly a bit split on them. πŸ™„
Wishing you the best of luck! Hope it turns out exactly how you want it! 😍

I see everyone online pushing all these different vitamins and supplements to speed up recovery and get rid of swelling, but my doctor is telling me not to bother buying anything at all. I guess she might be right, but I don't know... what have you guys actually experienced with this kind of stuff?

Thanks for all the love, everyone! Just got out of surgery and everything went smoothly. Now I’m just playing the waiting game until my follow-up to see what the results look like! 😁

That really falls into the realm of nutritional theory. There isn't a direct, proven link showing that dietary supplements can make a massive difference since vitamins aren't medications, though they can certainly help. On the flip side, we also know exactly what happens when you overdo it with themβ€”which is definitely a possibility.

So, I’ve got surgery scheduled in just under a month, and I haven't even started on the pre-op tests I need to get done yet. Like, seriously? So, does anyone know how long it actually takes to get all those tests finished? Is there going to be a massive wait just to get them scheduled, and do you think I can realistically squeeze everything in within a month?
Like it says, the results can't be more than a month old, and now I'm starting to freak out a little because I really should have gotten these ordered sooner...

Most labs will have your results ready the same day, or at most by the next morning. In the absolute worst-case scenario, if you draw blood on a Friday, you might be looking at Monday before you can pick up the results. You usually don't even need an appointment for blood work, whether you're hitting up a local clinic or a private lab, so maybe you're talking about different kinds of tests? As for an EKG, your primary care doctor can knock that out in like 15 minutesβ€”not sure if yours requires an appointment or not, since every office handles things differently

So they want my weight, Rh factor, and APTV? Honestly, I don't have a clue what any of that even means, but apparently, I need to head over to medical biochemistry to get it sorted out.

slydriver56 said:so what about weight, Rh factor, and APTT? I honestly have zero clue what any of that means, but my doctor's note says I need a full biochemistry panel

Basically, they check for the four main blood typesβ€”A, B, AB, and Oβ€”along with the Rhesus (Rh) factor, which determines if you're Rh positive or Rh negative. (If you've ever donated blood at a Red Cross drive, you probably already have this info on your medical record.)

The Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT) and Prothrombin Time (PT) tests are used to monitor anyone on blood thinners and are standard requirements before any kind of surgery.

Turnaround time: You'll get the results the same day.

Keep in mind that not everyone is on anticoagulant therapy. Because of that, the primary goal isn't just monitoring medication; it's actually about establishing the patient's baseline clotting capacityβ€”basically seeing how long it takes for their blood to clot naturally and assessing those inherent levels.

The secondary role comes into play if someone is already on anticoagulants. In those cases, we use the tests to see if the current dosage is hitting the target range, or to adjust things if the anesthesiologist decides there's an increased risk based on the patient's preoperative medical history.
