This is regarding the classifieds subforum.

A moderator just slapped me with a warning because I bumped my ad. When I asked why, he claimed there’s nothing in the rules stating that bumping is allowed. So, even though I waited a full week before bumping—while everyone else seems to be doing it almost daily—I still get hit with a warning. 😠

From what I can tell, having spent a long time on various forums, I know how these things work. If you look at a major site like PC Expert, users are allowed to bump their ads there too. But according to Palma Sutro's logic, that wouldn't be permitted under the rules.

THE UNWRITTEN RULE HAS ALWAYS BEEN THAT YOU CAN BUMP A POST AFTER AT LEAST A WEEK.

I want justice here. I'm looking for support to have this warning removed from my record.

God knows you're wound tight on this one. :-) The same thing happened to me—some moderator gave me grief after I bumped my listing in the buy/sell section once every ten days, but I didn't let it get to me. Maybe he’s just the new guy? Taking his job a bit too literally, perhaps.
I'm pretty sure I even got a warning before they hit me with a month-long ban 😁. Then, a week later, they finally unbanned me.

I'm with you on this: it's an unwritten rule that bumping once a week is perfectly fine.

He isn't a new moderator; he’s been handling the forum classifieds for decades now. 🙂

If Taylor Swift actually did their job properly and dealt with the idiots who bump posts almost every single day... my ad wouldn't be buried at the very bottom on page X.

Honestly, that’s a fair question.
But if you just post a comment saying "bump" or "up" just to move the thread—that’s definitely bumping, and you're gonna get hit for it.
Then again, you always get those people who list something at a ridiculous price right out of the gate just so they can "lower" it every few days (aka constant bumping). Hard to prove if someone's doing it on purpose or if they're just indecisive, though.

That "written rule" applies to the 'Classifieds' subforum. Nowhere does it say those rules apply to the cell phone section. We have specific subforums for hardware and phones for a reason.

Since the 'Mobile Market' subforum has its own dedicated thread with its own set of rules (which doesn't mention a bump ban), and it makes zero mention of following the rules from other sections, it's common sense that the rules listed right there are the only ones you need to follow.

Take the issue of posting personal info or phone numbers in an ad. On the main 'Classifieds' board, that's been

Nobody was acting like a smart-ass during those three years and handing out infractions to people selling phones with their contact info just because the 'Classifieds' rules said so... mainly because the 'Mobile Market' rules didn't prohibit it until 2010.
This proves the 'Classifieds' rules don't automatically carry over to the 'Mobile Market.'

And use some logic here: someone trying to sell a phone is going to read the rules on the 'Mobile Market' page (if they even bother reading at all), not spend five days digging through every single other subforum on the site just to make sure they don't accidentally break some obscure rule while posting an ad.

Yeah, I actually caught an infraction myself for bumping a post five days after listing it, and I didn't even get a warning first. For years, people were bumping on the 'Mobile Market' without any issues.
It seems to me the moderators are just power-tripping and stirring up trouble where none is needed.

The rules were posted on August 28, 2009, and some updates were made to that specific post on September 21, 2009.
Essentially, the rules state that bumping threads and other nonsense is prohibited, and that's all there is to it.

If you're referring to the Mobile Market, new rules were established there yesterday.

As for other subreddits, I can't really comment since I don't visit them. These are the rules that apply here, plain and simple.
Take it, or leave it!

And one small side note.
To ban someone means to revoke their access to Reddit.
I don't really go around banning people; instead, I issue strikes based on the violation committed.
Specifically, breaking subforum rules results in a 30-point penalty that lasts for 30 days.
An automatic ban occurs once someone hits 100 points. So, as soon as someone exceeds 100 points, they are automatically suspended from the site, if I recall correctly, for a period of 3 days.
I hope that clears up how the forum's point system works.

Since the Mobile subforum is nested "under" the Classifieds section, logic suggests the same general rules apply, just with some leniency specifically for mobile devices.
Basically, if something isn't mentioned in the mobile rules, the Classifieds rules take over. And if it's not in the Classifieds rules either, then Reddit's site-wide rules apply—which everyone is required to read before ever posting here anyway!

I tried to lay everything out clearly so people don't spend five days digging through the rulebooks on every other sub on Reddit trying to figure out what's allowed.

I feel bad that the folks who were bumping threads over the last few days got a warning, especially since weekly bumps are actually fine now, but honestly, it’s not the end of the world—I haven't seen anyone get banned over it yet.😉

It’s obvious. The dates in those links line up perfectly with when they added the supplements to the "Mobile Marketplace" listings—updates that don't mention any bumps at all.

Since the Mobile subforum sits right "below" the Classifieds section, common sense dictates that they should follow the same rules—except, of course, that the regulations for phones are a bit more relaxed.
Look, here's the deal: if it isn't explicitly stated in the mobile section rules, then you default to the Marketplace guidelines. Period. And if it’s not even mentioned in those Marketplace rules? I'm not about enforcing rules retroactively—doesn't make any sense to me.
