"Country" is a pretty broad term, isn't it? ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

Jason Richardson5 said:So, I was at work the other day, just had some random station playing in the background, when I heard some absolute garbage being broadcasted. Honestly? I decided right then and there that Iโ€™m never turning on the radio again. ๐Ÿ‘

My old man and his crew are always glued to the radio. They were born back in the 40s, you know? ๐Ÿ™ Itโ€™s honestly such a vibe when I wake up and head to breakfast before work, and the radio starts blasting all the biggest hits from the last fifty years. Itโ€™s always like thatโ€”the station never fails to catch me off guard. Thatโ€™s exactly how a love for vinyl gets built. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

Luka Niลพetiฤ‡?
Stop dropping those damn emojis all the time, you're just confusing everyone and making them take what's written in the wrong context... ๐Ÿ˜•

Why do you keep using that emoji? Youโ€™re just confusing everyone and making them take things out of context. ๐Ÿ˜•

If you actually listened to Luka, he might give you a compliment for once. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

It sucks that I can't say what I really think on this board... too long an explanation to get into. It's just how the system works. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

Expanding one's musical horizons requires a careful, deliberate touchโ€”lots of deep thinking involved...

Without doing your homework, youโ€™re basically flying blind. I canโ€™t tell you how much I missed out on simply because I wasn't digging deeper. Take The Rolling Stones, for instanceโ€”they're iconic, sure, but back in that era (say, up through '67 or '68), there were so many incredible rock bands out there. Once you realize theyโ€™re just the tip of the iceberg, it actually becomes a little underwhelming to realize how much greatness you've been overlooking.
It's the same story with the Grateful Dead; they're great, but honestly, compared to the sheer depth of that psychedelic scene, they can feel a bit one-dimensional once you start exploring the alternatives.
Or think about when you only know the big German names like Kraftwerk or Tangerine Dreamโ€”you start digging, and suddenly you find an entire ocean of bands that aren't just better, but arguably way more innovative. I'm talking about that golden era of experimental rock from 1970 to '75.
Even with progressive rockโ€”names like ELP or Yes feel almost pedestrian when you stumble upon the massive, sprawling landscapes of the Italian, Swedish, or even the late-era British scenes.
This logic applies to pretty much any genre, really. Jazz is a perfect example.
At the end of the day, yes, deep diving takes timeโ€”there's no way around thatโ€”but that's exactly why the internet exists. Itโ€™s easily one of its most noble uses.

The best way to discover new bands was through:

I really think last.fm is such a fantastic tool when you're looking to stumble upon some awesome new bands ๐Ÿ™

Last.fm is such a pretentious mess, but honestly? Itโ€™s become a total blast over the years! ๐Ÿ™‚

I don't really feel like hunting through ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Look, I love the classics, but I honestly prefer stuff that feels a bit more down-to-earth ๐Ÿ˜
I can't exactly smash a glass to Mussorgsky or Chopin. ๐Ÿคท

It kind of just happens, you know? Like, totally spontaneous...
Sometimes I'll be scrolling through YouTube and stumble upon a track that just hits differentโ€”then I end up diving down a rabbit hole, listening to everything theyโ€™ve ever made, and eventually, I'm just buying their whole discography because I can't help myself.
Other times, I'll hop on Last.fm to see who else sounds like my current favorites, and that's usually how I find some hidden gems.
Or Iโ€™ll catch a glowing review over on Pandora for an album that looks solid, and boom, Iโ€™m listening to that too.
Though, honestly... I definitely spend way too much time getting lost in Wikipedia deep dives...
There are plenty of ways to do it ๐Ÿ˜

Mostly I track everything through Last.fm, though I dip into YouTube occasionally, or just rely on various forums and the occasional recommendation from friends

And honestly, thereโ€™s always this endless mountain of new music I want to get through, but the clock is always ticking too fast...

Honestly, just stick to following Pitchfork. If they give an album a score higher than an 8, you can bet itโ€™s actually worth your time to download and listen to.

restlessranger30 said:Honestly, if you want to save yourself from wasting hours on mediocre garbage, just stick to Pitchfork. Itโ€™s basically my golden rule at this pointโ€”if they drop a review and slap an 8 or higher on it, thatโ€™s your signal to stop scrolling and actually start downloading. If it hits that threshold, the band is legit, and it's absolutely worth your time to give them a spin.
๐Ÿ™‚

Honestly, youโ€™re way better off hunting for fresh talent on NPR than digging through Pitchfork. Seriously, why even bother with those pretentious critics when you can just let the pros at the station do the heavy lifting for you? โ˜• God, those damn hipstersโ€”itโ€™s like they reproduce through mitosis or some kind of weird biological glitch. โ˜•

Iโ€™ve got to give some credit to:
the guys at MTV and The Pixies
the energy from the Hives
the vibe from Killing Joke, Elvis Costello, Magazine, and The Replacements
the influence of Sparks, Auteurs, and Split Enz
and Darko for those Why songs! ๐Ÿคฃ
