My monitor's three-year warranty expired just two months ago, and then, wouldn't you know it, the issues started popping up yesterday.

Any idea what caused this, and honestly, is it even worth trying to fix?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I don't typically browse these forums, but I am glad I stumbled upon this thread. I have an Apple iPad Pro, and based on the photos here, I dealt with the exact same issue about a year ago. My screen actually had even larger blotches than what you are seeing. I took it to repair shops, brought it to a buddy who knows tech, and practically went door-to-door looking for help; everyone told me it was a lost cause, blah, blah, blah. Some people even tore it apart just to explain exactly where the failure was occurring... blah, blah, blah. Eventually, I gave up. I left it powered off for a few days, and after that, the blotches actually shifted position. That made me realize they weren't dead pixels, haha. Once I started using it again, the spots vanished entirely, though they did act up for a few days—popping up here and there like the screen was oily. I’ve concluded that this happens, at least in my case, because I cleaned the screen with some liquid and likely let a little moisture seep between the layers. As they say, patience pays off!
