The vocals are definitely an acquired taste—at times, it honestly sounds like he’s having a full-blown psychotic panic attack. 🙂 You just have to get used to it. I remember when I first heard this, I thought it was incredibly jarring, but after a few spins, you completely adjust. Now, looking back, I can't even figure out what I found weird about it in the first place. It's funny how that works... 🙂
Speaking of vocalists, if we're talking pure chaos, one of the most unhinged performances I’ve ever heard belongs to Sylvain Houde. This was the old-school Kataklysm era; on the album Temple of Knowledge, it was wild, though on Sorcery, it felt slightly more controlled. 🙂 When I first encountered his style, my immediate reaction was, "OMG, what is happening?" I thought the guy was "unhinged"—he seemed totally off-beat, lacking any sense of rhythm or intonation. 🙏 But now? When I listen to it, it actually sounds freaking amazing. Everything makes perfect sense and hits exactly where it needs to. Regardless, this is an anthology-level death metal album and easily my favorite Kataklysm record.
Total chaos. KATAKLYSM - BECKONING OF THE XUL 😁🙂🙏
