And I guess we'll just have to wait and see who takes home the Laureus on February 7th. 😁

Honestly, man, just ignore that whole nonsense about the costs—you're putting out some really solid posts here.👍As for the Laureus this year... I don't know, it might be a stretch for Blanka. Her sport just isn't as "flashy" to voters, you know? There are plenty of female athletes in way more high-profile sports who are absolutely crushing it right now.

Yes, that was my understanding as well.

I don't know, I see it differently.
Out of the 11 awards handed out so far, 5 went to track and field athletes (which shows how big the sport still is), and 4 went to tennis players (same as last year, so hopefully we don't see a repeat). That means the top female track athlete actually has a pretty decent shot.
Isinbayev won it twice before, and they're basically in the same lane.
Just hope some random golfer doesn't swoop in and take it... 😁

analogowl122 said:No matter who you are, I think anyone here would lose their mind if they were treated this way.
The IOC published this list of athlete achievements, which is basically how they judge whether a coach was successful.
They even included everything for Ivica. Even his second and third place finishes in the World Cup...
So, it’s perfectly understandable why Vlašić is furious.
He didn't say anything against Kostelić, or even against skiing.
His issue is strictly with the IOC. And honestly, I think he's completely justified.
But then Kostelić turned it into this whole "Vlašić vs Kostelić" thing. While throwing shade at track and field and basketball along the way...

As far as I can tell, the IOC's absolute priority when making these choices is the Olympic Games. Last year was the Winter Olympics, Ivica grabbed two silvers, and that's where the story ends for them. I agree they should have listed Blanka's meet wins if they were going to include Ivica's World Cup results, but is that really enough to warrant an open letter to the IOC? Especially since this isn't even the first time. The public knows exactly what Blanka has achieved and exactly who she is. Besides, she even won the top female athlete award from the IOC herself. Joško did this because of his own ego. You can read between the lines of the entire letter that he thinks he's the best coach out there—which he pretty much admitted in his statement to Fox today. I mean, who else is even participating in these selections anyway? And I don't see how Gips is supposed to take that letter any other way than personally, if the guy is essentially saying, "I'm better than whoever you picked."

Isinbayev won it twice, and her events are pretty similar to this.
Man, I just hope some random golfer doesn't swoop in and grab it.😁

It’s just... I mean, Isinbayev used to totally crush the world whenever she felt like it, and those other girls were out there grabbing Olympic golds and smashing world records. But then you look at Blanka, and even though she's been super dominant, she still hasn't snagged an Olympic gold or a world record.

I’m right there with analogowl122. It’s such a massive injustice toward Blanka's coach 😁. Honestly, she’s a much better athlete in her later years than Ivica ever was. It’s honestly embarrassing how the HHO handled the criteria for this award 👎
.

analogowl122 said:Even though she doesn't compete in every single discipline, just high jump.
Besides, Ivica doesn't compete in every discipline either.
If you look at it this way—World Athletics covers a huge range of disciplines.
And Blanka competes in just one of them.
The same goes for FIS. I don't see Ivica competing in cross-country skiing, biathlon, ski jumping, Nordic combined, freestyle skiing, or snowboarding.
He only competes in one specific area—alpine skiing.

That's not quite right. Ivica competes in ALL alpine disciplines (slalom, giant slalom, downhill, super-G, alpine combined, and parallel slalom), while Blanka only does one.
It’s silly to lump all other snow sports into the same bucket. Alpine skiing is its own thing with those specific disciplines, just like track and field.
It would be like me saying every single ball sport belongs in the exact same category. 🤷

We shall see who walks away with the Laureus award on February 7th! 😁

I am uncertain if Blanka will claim the title, but it seems obvious to everyone that Janica remains the greatest American athlete of all time, and that legacy will stand for a very long time.

Four Olympic gold medals! Truly spectacular!
Five incredible World Cup gold medals!
Two World Cups!

She is truly in a league of her own. Absolutely nobody can even stand in the same sentence as her!

I’m not entirely convinced that Gips deserved that award for 2010. Furthermore, an egoist like Vlašić doesn't merit any mention while he’s busy attacking other coaches and sports out of pure wounded pride. He went after Ruduć first, and now he's coming for Gips.
It’s such a shame that Gips chose to descend to that Australian's level. Instead, he should have maintained his dignity and simply said, "If you want the award so badly, go ahead and take it—you've certainly earned it!"

In my view, Vlašić was treated unfairly back in 2010, yet her recent conduct serves as a perfect testament to her true character and who she really is.

"Track and field is a global sport with over 200 member nations, unlike skiing which just isn't on that level," Joško Vlašić told 60 Minutes, adding: "World journalists have been telling me Blanka is the best athlete on the planet. There's zero mention of Ivica in those rankings, not even in Europe or anywhere else, which just proves I was a better coach than Ante back in 2010, plain and simple."

What a total troll this guy is, man. 🤦

What did I get wrong? 😁
I just said he competes in alpine disciplines.
He does it because he can, because those disciplines actually complement each other.
But alpine skiing isn't everything out there when it comes to skiing.
Even Ivica doesn't compete in every single type of "skiing" out there, even though they fall under the same federation.
Same goes for Blanka—she doesn't compete in every discipline under "track and field," even if she's part of that federation too.
And the reason Blanka doesn't try others is simple. It's just impossible. Her main event doesn't really "complement" anything else, unless you count the heptathlon...

Honestly, it's not just Vlašić dealing with an ego problem.
If you ask me, gips is actually leading the pack on that one.

2 World Cup titles
There isn't anyone else you could even mention in the same breath as her. Not one person...

I'm not convinced gips deserved that award back in 2010, but then again, an egoist like Vlašić doesn't deserve even a mention while he's busy attacking other coaches and tearing down different sports out of pure wounded pride... He went after Ruduć first, and now he's coming for gips...
It's just a shame that gips decided to sink down to that guy's level instead of just staying cool and saying, "If he wants the award, fine, he earned it."

As far as I'm concerned, Vlašić was wronged in 2010, but his behavior just proves exactly who he is and what he's made of...

I've always been protective of Janica and everything she's achieved, so maybe you should edit your post so you aren't doing her such an injustice...😛

I’d say he’s basically a carbon copy of Gips at this point.

Go back and actually read the quote again.😁

Staying on topic here: who cares about Vlašić? He's nothing special. Gips is out there building Terminators... and honestly, he's one himself.

No one even belongs in the same conversation as her. No one!

I'm not sure Ivica deserved that award back in 2010, but an ego-driven guy like Vlašić doesn't deserve even a mention while he's busy attacking other coaches and sports just to soothe his bruised pride. He went after Ruduć first, and now he's coming for gips...

Let's not drag this into it too. It'll just turn into a pointless argument that goes nowhere.
Just to add, this kind of comparison feels pretty useless to me...
Because it doesn't give you the full picture.
-Roger Federer doesn't have an individual Olympic gold or a Davis Cup. Does that make him any less than Janica?
-Michael Jordan only has one Olympic gold, no World Championship medals, and isn't even in the top 10 for NBA titles won.
-If we had a four-time Formula 1 champion, how would that stack up against all of Janica's golds?
-And what about Tiger Woods? How much gold does he have?
etc...
So I'm really not a fan of these comparisons. You can't judge fairly like that. Subjectivity always plays such a huge role...

If I may offer a quick observation, I find this type of comparison entirely futile and unproductive.
It simply fails to provide the full picture.
-Roger Federer doesn't have an individual Olympic gold or a Davis Cup title. Does that make him significantly inferior to Janica?
-Michael Jordan only has one Olympic gold and no world championship medals, yet he isn't even in the top 10 for NBA titles won.
-If we had a four-time Formula 1 champion, how would that stack up against all of Janica's golds?
-And what about Tiger Woods? How many golds does he hold?
etc...
Therefore, I am quite averse to such comparisons. It is impossible to judge fairly, as subjectivity always plays a massive role.

What exactly are you getting at?

Did I claim that Janica is the greatest American female athlete ever? I did.
Is there any female athlete who surpasses her? If so, please name them.

What could possibly be the connection between Federer, Jordan, or Woods and the point I was making?

🤣

Just imagine if she hadn't retired so early. She probably would have walked away with at least four Cups. 😁

Honestly, there’s really no point in dragging Janica into this debate. Blanka and Ivica can just stick to helping her with her overalls or something. ☕

It’s a toss-up for both of them.

I actually kind of like Ivica, but who even is Joško Vlašić?

In my view, Gips is definitely the superior choice, though frankly, nobody can say with any real certainty who holds the edge. It seems to me that Joško spends far too much time centering himself within Blanka's achievements, when in reality, he contributes significantly less to her than Gips does to Ivica, especially considering that Bojan is actually the one coaching Blanka.
