I am a complete novice when it comes to syncing subtitles with downloaded movies. I just grabbed > along with its subtitle file, but I simply cannot get the text to line up with the dialogue. Even when I try adjusting the start times within >, nothing changes—I save the subtitle, reload it, and I'm still stuck with the exact same issue. Does anyone have any idea where I might be going wrong?

You’ve clearly downloaded a faulty translation. Just try grabbing a different one instead.

Alright, I finally did it. I managed to download a new subtitle file, and it works perfectly right out of the box without me having to mess around with any settings. It seems like you really have to find that specific version that’s actually compatible, doesn't it? This is literally the sixth different version of Avatar I've tried downloading, and this is the only one that actually fits...

Look, when you're hunting for subs, you gotta make sure the filename matches the movie file exactly. Like, look at this

Avatar.[2009].DVDRip.Xvid.Blood

Something like that is what you'll see when you download from a site. When you're searching, try to match the title as closely as possible. Doesn't have to be a perfect mirror, just an example

If that doesn't work, honestly? Just keep scrolling through the list until you find one that fits. Usually, a decent sub file is tiny—maybe 20 to 80KB. It's way less of a headache to just grab a fresh one that actually works than to waste your life trying to sync some wonky, mismatched file. 👍

...or in most cases, you just have to nudge the first and last word using Subtitle Workshop and everything should align properly. I guess.

Sure, that works if things are mostly okay. But what happens when some hack completely trashes the entire subtitle file? No software on the planet can fix that. You'll have half the movie looking fine and then suddenly—boom—total disaster halfway through. Just an example, but you know how it goes. 😁

You'll lose your mind trying to get the timing right. 😁

You’ll probably lose your mind trying to sync it up until it actually works. 😁

Naiso, I’ve had a few instances where the subtitles just wouldn't align with the video no matter what I did. After messing around with it for a couple of days, I finally realized a chunk of the movie was missing right in the middle—maybe a few minutes' worth. It seems like someone "professionally" processed the file, maybe by stitching two different DVDs together into one single file 🤷 and then uploading it to a torrent. 😁

So you spend all this time syncing the subs to the start and end of the film, only to have it turn into a total disaster halfway through.

After messing around with it for a few days, I finally realized there was a massive chunk missing right in the middle—like a couple of minutes just gone. Someone probably tried to be "pro" by ripping two different DVDs onto one single disc 🤷 and then slapped it on a torrent. 😁

I ran into the exact same thing with that Solomon Kan release
The subs were a total disaster. Every single one I downloaded from the web was completely off. I honestly thought, "What, is this a new movie and nobody bothered to make decent subtitles yet?" Turns out, there’s just a gap in the actual footage, maybe two minutes worth, right in the middle.
So yeah, I just grabbed the file again and fixed the timing myself. 😁

And you can actually do it that way too... if you're lucky and the subtitles aren't total garbage, you can just hit ctl and the arrow keys 😉

Yeah, works if the subtitles are decent enough
but if they suck? Nobody's fixing that crap for you 👍
