Jeffrey Cooper7 said:So what, are GIFs in a new thread gonna "suck up" less bandwidth than if they were mixed in with regular photos? 😕

Nah, it's because someone browsing on a phone might choose to load images but skip the GIFs to save data. If everything is lumped into one thread, you don't get that choice. Another way is just posting them as links.

Who suggested it? I'm guessing Zodiac, but I just don't get the logic. How does someone who's never even hung out in that subforum suddenly become a moderator? Does that mean some mod can just nominate me for the Politics board even though I never go there, and then I'd be a mod setting my own rules? Man, that's wild...

Because it's about jokes, not Politics.

This particular thread has already surpassed 3,000 replies, yet suddenly, GIFs are being prohibited? People visit this subforum specifically for this topic to have some fun, and what we are experiencing right now is anything but entertaining. 👎

Furthermore, I find the repeated deletion of posts quite troubling—posts that weren't even off-topic and were perfectly relevant to the discussion.

mellowraven22 said:Not necessarily, because someone browsing the web via their smartphone can simply choose to view images while skipping the GIFs. If everything is contained within a single thread, that specific option isn't available. Alternatively, one could simply post GIFs as links instead.

That seems like a weak argument to me. Of course I wouldn't bother scrolling through an entire image-heavy thread while on my phone; I’d just quote from another topic. Once I get home to my PC, I can take my time and actually enjoy all the pictures properly.

mellowraven22 said:True, but this way you actually get a choice without sacrificing functionality.

But you're losing the soul of the content. People who want to share things now have this unnecessary pressure to overthink everything. It'll just discourage them from posting at all.
The whole point should be for people to enjoy themselves on the thread, not for it to be some perfectly optimized tool.

Besides, where are all those mobile users who supposedly hate GIFs so much?

Kate Castillo55 made a solid point there.
1) Honestly, I wouldn't even bother opening a thread dedicated just to photos on my phone, since they tend to clutter up one side of the screen so much anyway.
2) After spending all this time reading through and contributing to this thread, it feels a bit sudden to have the rules change on us out of nowhere like this.
3) It’s a shame, really, because they actually went ahead and deleted posts that were part of the actual discussion, even though those points were pretty important.

From what I can tell, the old Funny Photo thread isn't coming back. If that's the case, then I guess I won't be sticking around either!

Hey Admins, it doesn't seem like there's a really solid reason for this, and it looks like you're just playing favorites! I don't see anyone willing to admit that maybe things went a little too far and that the old thread could actually be unlocked.
I might be able to get over the whole copy-pasting GIFs thing, but I just can't deal with the thread being shut down and that person's rudeness. If the thread stays locked, I'm out... And honestly, most people browsing on their iPhones aren't even looking for the Funny Photo thread anyway!

To everyone else, thanks so much for standing by me! It definitely feels like Kradeze is running the show around here, too!

Found one right here.

Everything was proceeding quite smoothly until today, at which point the new moderator made her debut. Previously, no one seemed to harbor any grievances regarding the excessive bandwidth being consumed, yet suddenly everyone is inventing these absurdities simply to shield her, despite the fact that you all know perfectly well she is in the wrong.
I firmly believe that only Ryan Phillips6 deserves to hold a moderator position on the joke subreddits, rather than someone who possesses absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever.

Kate Castillo55 said:3) honestly those deleted posts that actually mattered were totally wiped out

Look, moderation stuff isn't supposed to be discussed outside of the main forum area—unless the mods specifically set up a dedicated grievance thread on the parent subforum. If you tried this kind of talk on any other board, you'd be getting slapped with warnings left and right.

I honestly love all the photos posted so far, they've been great 🙏 if you're heading out, I totally get where you're coming from, really.
I can't say I was expecting any different kind of response to our questions, to be honest.

edit: Tyndall, yeah, they probably would have handed out a warning, but it's such a shame they didn't just let the posts stay up.

Oh, come on, seriously? We're really splitting things up just for a handful of people who might be using an Apple device or just checking photos on their phones—that’s honestly such a reach. Besides, once they actually sit down at their PC, they'll definitely check out the full image without needing a magnifying glass or anything. I was really hoping for a more sensible answer here, rather than being told we need a whole separate thread for GIFs just so some guy doesn't have to wait ten minutes for his data to load... ☕

Because this is about Jokes, not Politics.

Look, I totally get that you're going to defend your own side, but why go this far? Why didn't you guys just start a proper thread over in the Jokes section and ask the regulars there, "Hey, do you want smglsnk to be a moderator?" Just run a clean poll so people can actually decide. There's nothing wrong with him; he's polite, he's active, and surely he shouldn't be barred from being a moderator just because he isn't buddies with the current ones, right? 🤷

Great. Enjoy your new thread without all those GIFs and extra clutter. At least things should load much faster now. 😁

Just my two cents on this:

1) For the protesters: please, let’s try to keep things civil and respectful. If we lose our cool, nobody is going to listen to what we actually want, right?
2) For the admins: why don't we hold off on locking anything down until the moderator in question has a chance to weigh in?

How much of an absolute idiot does someone have to be to completely derail one of the best discussion threads on this entire forum?🙄

Kate Castillo55 said:edit: mellowraven22, look, sure, they'd probably get a warning, but I wish they could at least leave the posts up.

It’s just because some mods go through and scrub posts that got flagged while others just let them sit there. Personally, I’m definitely in that first group. Like, when people just start venting and throwing shade at the mods, it doesn't actually add anything to the conversation. It's just useless noise within the thread.

mellowraven22 said:Look, you don't argue about moderation anywhere except on Amtrak or, if the mods have their way, in a dedicated appeal thread on the main subforum. If you tried pulling that stuff on any other board, you'd be getting handed out warnings like candy.

It’s pretty obvious you haven't even laid eyes on that subforum, let alone actually been there, because if you had, you'd see there isn't some magic appeal thread anywhere—mostly because the guy going by Zodiac didn't feel like setting one up (he basically told me he was too busy getting cozy in bed with his fellow moderator...☕ ) and here’s the quote for proof:
Zodiac said:She's great in bed, and since I happen to be the moderator.... You know how things work in this country, buddy... 🙂

He clearly just assumes nobody's gonna step up while he's running things like a dictator, because honestly, who knows? If we try to push back, we might just end up exiled to some deserted island...☕

Jeffrey Cooper7 said:Look, you clearly haven't even stepped foot in that subforum, let alone seen it. If you had, you'd know there isn't a single thread for complaints anywhere. Apparently, some guy named Zodiac just didn't feel like making one—he told me he was too busy hooking up with his moderator or something... ☕ so here's the quote:

I have been there. Like I already said, it's totally up to the mod to decide if a thread exists. If there isn't one, then you just gotta deal with Amtrak.

mellowraven22 said:Yeah, I was there—and honestly, like I mentioned before, it’s totally up to the mods whether we get a thread for this or if we just have to take it to Amtrak.

Alright, I guess we'll just sit tight until the lady and her little gentleman decide to show up and tell us what's what...☕

Why can't we all just return to the way things used to be, where everyone was content and satisfied?

Perhaps we should consider removing Countess from this subforum entirely, given her apparent lack of moderation skills—and, frankly, her lack of authority.

Alright, let's wrap this thing up—because of some drama over on Reddit, the mods aren't budging, and honestly, plebs don't get to pick who runs the show anyway. So yeah, just forget about that part.

As for how we're actually gonna set up the subforum—you know, all that stuff regarding the image threads and layout—we'll talk more about that later once we have some actual results to show you. I'm gonna close this thread out now though, since there's really no point in dragging it on. We heard what you had to say.
