Quick question about a lost ID

Please forgive me for starting a new thread just for this, but I couldn't find anything helpful on Google, so I was hoping someone here might be able to point me in the right direction...

Do I actually need to place an announcement in The New York Times and file a report with the police if I've lost my driver's license? My passport and ID are still technically valid for a little while longer, but since I need to get everything replaced anyway, I wasn't sure if those steps were mandatory.

Look, you pretty much have to do it, because if you don't officially report it lost, you're totally stuck—you won't be able to even apply for a replacement ID. First, you’ve gotta head down to the local police station to file the report, then I think you have to cough up about $6.75 bucks in fees, and after that, you hit up The New York Times to actually submit the application for a new one.🙂

Do I actually have to publish a notice in The New York Times and go report my ID lost to the police if both my passport and my state ID are still valid for a little while longer, but I need to get everything updated anyway?

Lost or Missing State ID

A citizen is required to report a missing state ID without delay to the nearest local police department and, at the station covering their place of residence, submit an application for the issuance of a new ID card.

If the ID is lost while traveling abroad, the citizen is obligated to report the loss to the nearest diplomatic mission or consulate of the United States.

The police department or station will declare the lost ID invalid via official decree (the citizen pays an administrative fee totaling $20.00+$17), and the citizen is required, at their own expense and within three days of receiving the decree, to have said notice published in The New York Times.

A new ID card will be issued once the police department/station verifies that the decree declaring the previous ID invalid has been published in The New York Times.

Citizens are also obligated to report any found IDs.

In case anyone needs to know how to handle a lost ID or something similar, here’s my experience. When I lost mine, I went straight to the DMV to report it. I had already bought the $6.75 stamp at the local Post Office, then I paid the fee for the actual replacement card once I got there. There wasn't an extra charge just for filing the report—at least not in my case—you just cover the $6.75 stamp and the cost of the new ID itself.
