Knight & Day (2010)

Publicly, Tom Cruise gets labeled a nutcase or an idiot, mostly because of his weird stunts and the drama surrounding PR and Scientology or his relationship with Katie Holmes. But when it comes to the work, you can't deny he's a total pro who gives 110% every single time, even doing his own insane stunts that have nearly killed him more than once. He’s also proven he can handle heavy drama just as well as lighthearted roles—like in Tropic Thunder, where he basically stole the show with that hilarious performance.
After a two-year break—which is a long time for a major Hollywood actor whose movies easily pull in at least $100M—Cruise is coming back with the breezy action comedy Knight & Day. Based on the trailers, it looks like a totally over-the-top Hyper Mission Impossible, featuring a super relaxed Tom Cruise playing a "secret" agent who acts like he's basically Superman's brother, given how he survives those ridiculous stunts.
Joining Tom Cruise are Cameron Diaz (who he already worked with in Vanilla Sky), Peter Sarsgaard, and Paul Dan. Interestingly, the film is helmed by James Mangold, whose resume covers everything from Cop Land and Kate & Leopold to Walk the Line and Yuma.
The movie is set to hit theaters on June 25, 2010.

PLOT

Milner (Cruise) is a secret agent who goes on a blind date with unlucky-in-love June Havens (Diaz), and ends up pulling her into a serious yet comedic journey to protect a powerful battery that holds the key to an infinite power source.

I have to admit, I’m always down for a good Tom Cruise flick, no matter what it is. Maybe it's because I grew up watching Top Gun and Days of Thunder? Either way, I watch them expecting a good time.

Review: Knight & Day

Thank God for Knight & Day. Calling this summer a disappointment would be putting it lightly, but those trailers actually looked like a decent action-comedy. Having Tom Cruise in the lead helps, too; even with all the messy PR and Scientology drama from recent years, he doesn't usually make bad movies. For sure, Knight & Day is another great Tom Cruise vehicle, and fingers crossed this kicks off a streak that might actually save the summer season.
I honestly had a blast with Knight & Day—definitely worth a watch if you just want something fun. It feels like a spy spin on Romancing the Stone, and it totally outclasses similar flicks like Mr. & Mrs. Smith or Killers. Hopefully, this puts Cruise back on top where he belongs, and bump Mangold onto the A-list.

Review: Knight & Day

Tom Cruise has been a movie star for more than 25 years. But during that whole run, "fun" isn't a word people have typically used to describe his vibe on screen.
However, as he proves in James Mangold’s Knight and Day, the usually high-strung Cruise can lighten up. Even as he nears 50, Cruise is expanding his range—maybe not reaching a Cary Grant level of charm, but he's definitely playing with something way less rigid and intense than his usual stuff: something closer to genuine goofiness.
The marketing for this movie didn't exactly help, which is a shame because Knight and Day is actually pretty delightful: funny, fast-paced, and entertaining. It serves as a reminder of why Tom Cruise is such a massive star and makes you wish he’d let loose like this more often.

Review: Knight & Day

James Mangold has a pretty wild resume. Looking at a few highlights, he helped guide Angelina Jolie to an Oscar win in 1999 with Girl, Interrupted, in 2003 he directed the John Cusack thriller Identity, and in 2005 he directed Walk the Line, which snagged five Oscar nods and a win for Reese Witherspoon. His last outing was the two-time Oscar nominated Western remake 3:10 to Yuma, and somehow that leads straight to a loud action-comedy starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. How? Who knows, but Mangold delivered a fun movie that leans into Cruise's charisma and mostly gives the audience what the trailers promised.
All in all, Knight and Day was a total blast and packed with plenty of genuine laughs. If you're looking for a summer flick full of mindless entertainment, this is a solid distraction meant for a good time and nothing else.

Knight & Day falls flat on first dayIs this looking like another total disaster, kind of like Hex... because honestly, it actually looks like a pretty cute movie to me.

Honestly, I haven't sat through a single bad movie starring Tom Cruise, and trust me, I've seen a hell of a lot of them. So, I guess all that's left is to wait and see how this 🙂 turns out...

I watched it yesterday and honestly, I'm stumped. It felt like some kind of Hyper Mission Impossible, just totally over the top 🤷

Yeah... I honestly don't get how this tanked at the box office so hard. It's weird because the reviews are actually solid—people are saying the characters are great, Tom Cruise kills it, and the whole thing is just a blast. Plus, they had a killer marketing campaign, and Tom Cruise is getting tons of buzz lately after his Les Grossman bit at the MTV Video Music Awards, so when you look at the big picture... I really don't see where it went wrong.
People clearly haven't forgiven him for all that private life nonsense.🤷

Whatever... looks like Mission: Impossible IV might be in trouble too, since word is the production depends on how this one performs...

A really lovely little film 🤣

I watched it, and if I’m being perfectly honest, it just didn't do it for me. It felt like we've seen this exact story a thousand times before, you know? And some of the scenes were just completely absurd—like those car chases at the beginning, or that moment on the train where he stabs someone and then just pulls the knife out so casually, as if nothing happened, ha ha ha. It was such a tedious experience that I found myself counting down the minutes until the credits finally rolled.

It's a pretty solid action flick, I guess. The way it handles the John Holmes stuff is actually better than how they did it in Salt. There are a few quite fun, maybe even almost postmodernist writing choices in there, plus some action sequences that were just phenomenally directed.

Surprisingly fun—the action scenes are definitely over the top (though they're executed really well), and the Cruise / Diaz pairing has that certain chemistry... some solid dialogue too... it basically works as a perfect little brain-off escape...

Caught this one last night. Honestly? It’s a blast. Just non-stop action and laughs from start to finish... really solid entertainment. And man, Tom Cruise gets absolutely roasted in this thing. If you're into those high-energy action comedies, you definitely need to check it out 🙂.

I actually had a blast watching this today...
Tom’s just being his usual invincible self during those action sequences, where everything seems way too effortless... I really dug the banter between him and Cameron Diaz though... and honestly, the funniest part is how he’s constantly high!!!! absolute legend! 👍
