edge of darkness

It’s been eight years, but Mel Gibson is finally back in front of the lens for edge of darkness, the new thriller from director Martin Campbell (the guy behind Casino Royale and GoldenEye). It’s an adaptation of a 1986 mini-series that Campbell also directed, and word on the street is it’s a winner—I’m actually downloading 🙂 right now.

The story follows Thomas Craven, a homicide detective who starts digging into his activist daughter's death. What he finds isn't just her private life, but a massive corporate cover-up involving government officials, which eventually puts him in the crosshairs of an agent sent to scrub the evidence.

Holly shit... looks like Gibson is joining the ranks of those old-school legends who, following Clint in "Gran Torino" and Cane in "Harry Brown," decided it was time to take matters into their own hands... oh yeah... Mel Gibson is back and he's pissed😁

Yup... this is actually a movie adaptation of an American mini-series from back in '85. What's pretty cool is that the same guy directed both the series and this film—Martin Campbell (the director behind GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, The Legend of Zorro, and Casino Royale).

I sat down to watch this film tonight, and I have to say, it was truly exceptional. I would wholeheartedly recommend that you make some time to go see it 🙏

I just sat through it, and honestly? It wasn't anything special. I was expecting way more, especially given it’s the old Mel... maybe worth a single watch if you're bored, I guess...

I've got it, but I haven't actually sat down to watch it yet... though I have this nagging fear it might end up being something along the lines of Taken.

The movie is solid, though it just lacks that certain spark needed to reach greatness. 🙂

It leans a bit too heavily on those tired clichés about corporate greed and power plays, which felt a little played out, but it’s still decent enough. 🤷

Personally, I think Taken was a Taken phenomenon. 🤷

Spoilers ahead:

Taken is basically just your standard action thriller, whereas Edge of Darkness feels more like a heavy drama with some thriller elements thrown in. Plus, in Taken, you have this father fighting to save his daughter, but here? They kill the daughter off within the first five minutes of the movie.

I found the movie absolutely superb, primarily because I never once suspected they would tear her apart the moment those doors swung open 🤣. That sequence where everyone assumes she’s pregnant was also quite effective... simply because you're led to believe one thing, only for reality to shift entirely. That kind of subversion is vital to me.

I have a deep-seated dislike for films where the next beat is painfully predictable. With this particular story, I personally found it quite difficult to stay ahead of the plot. It wasn't until roughly the midpoint that I even began to form any real theories about where things were heading.

Ultimately, I am genuinely satisfied with the experience. This production, along with *A Bronx Tale*, are truly the last two films I've seen that left me feeling completely fulfilled.🙏

So, I finally sat down and watched it. I have to bring up the Taken phenomenon because there’s definitely a family dynamic at play here. In Taken, he's out to save his daughter, but he basically leaves a trail of bodies in his wake to get to the guy responsible. To make a long story short, the movie isn't bad by any means, but it's certainly nothing to write home about either. It’s just your typical, run-of-the-mill flick, especially considering all the garbage Hollywood usually tries to feed us lately.

I really liked this movie. Where it truly shines is Mel's performance in a few specific scenes—like that moment when she’s sleeping in the car and gets jolted awake by someone knocking on the window. Overall, though, it’s a solid watch. I'd give it a 4/5.

Honestly, this movie is a total gem. With all the mindless junk playing at the local multiplex lately, finding something actually worth your time feels like a win. It’s a super gripping, legit crime thriller that doesn't pull its punches.

It’s honestly refreshing to sit through a movie that doesn't feel the need to shove an action sequence down your throat every ten minutes just to keep some mindless audience member awake until the credits roll. Highly recommended.

"edge of darkness" is actually pretty solid. It’s got this calm, measured way of telling the story—not just mindless action for the sake of it—and the lead isn't some invincible superhero type, which feels right for Mel Gibson. Honestly, it feels like something that would have been made back in the 70s.

But man, that British guy was the best part of the whole thing... I can't for the life of me remember his name.
