If I were in your shoes, I’d go with this

Honestly, it's way more than you even need. Why on earth would you want a 500W unit anyway?

EVGA 550 W1—just grab it and call it a day. Honestly, you could probably get away with an EVGA 450 too, since your setup doesn't pull much power anyway. And a word of advice: never trust the salespeople at the local Best Buy. It’s rare to find someone there who actually tells you the truth.

That's probably enough for me: http://www.newegg.com/n/product/EVGA-450

Corsair RM450

Think this can handle:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850
4 gb ram
radeon hd 6850
2x sata dics , 1 x ide
2 x dvd

There’ll be plenty of options; they actually have a GPU support list right on their website if you want to check.

Good evening, everyone. Since nobody seems to be around to help, I guess I’ll just pick one myself....
I need a power supply for this specific build:

-CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400
-Motherboard: MSI K9N6PGM2-V2
-GPU: PowerColor ATI Radeon HD 3850, 512 MB
-HDD: Samsung HD161HJ, 160 GB
-A toaster,

Checking these shops: provided the price stays under $100(though if someone finds something cheaper that actually handles this setup, even better). I won't complain if it's just some basic generic unit from $67. I'm not looking for a NASA-grade power supply here; I just need something that keeps this rig running while I'm gaming.

The only thing you actually got right about $100 is

Benjamin King2 said:That’s really the only thing worth mentioning here. $100: The link you provided doesn't seem to be working on my end. It looks like a broken URL or maybe just a dead link from a local retailer. If you were trying to show me a specific deal on some hardware or a build list, could you try posting the link again? Or better yet, just paste the specs or the product names directly here. I'd be happy to take a look at what you're eyeing.

So, what you're telling me is that absolutely nothing cheaper in the link I sent is actually worth buying? Come on, man, give me a break. Just take a look at the link and tell me if it’s actually worth making the drive out to Indianapolis instead of just picking something up in Des Moines. If there’s anything in that list that isn't total junk, point it out—I'm hoping I actually have some decent options here.

It looks like this is officially the most ghost-town thread on the PC hardware forum. 🙂 Come on, people, help a guy out here—I'm trying to pick a power supply that won't die on this specific build.

It's available at Best Buy in Indianapolis right now, and it's on sale if you look closely.

The EVGA 450 is getting way too loud... that fan is starting to sound like a jet engine.

So, I ended up grabbing an EVGA 450W.

Nah, even that power supply isn't exactly quiet. Toss in an HDD and everything else, and between the vibrations and having a metal case, the whole thing just ends up humming and rattling away at me.

Would a Cooler Master Silent Pro M500 actually fix everything? I guess. It’s just that it’s almost twice the price of the EVGA one, which I can barely afford to swap out right now.

What kind of case are you running? If you’re using some cheap, bottom-of-the-barrel chassis, that’s almost certainly your culprit. As far as I can tell, neither that budget unit nor the EVGA isn't actually that loud. 🤷

TechCrunch is just the case. It wasn't making any noise at all until I swapped in a beefier graphics card. Or maybe it's just a coincidence, since the TechCrunch power supply fan started humming right around then too. I guess. Anyway, I have the whole rig sitting on a wooden desk, so the vibrations just travel straight into the furniture.

GTX 460 OC. That’s the card I just threw in. But honestly, I’m starting to think maybe even my hard drive is acting up?? Hmm

Just wanted to give a quick shout-out to fosna and Flftron for the advice on power supplies. I ended up picking up a 400W unit, specifically the FSP400-60PFN 85+.

To be honest, I am not an expert when it comes to power supplies, so I would truly appreciate some guidance. I am currently putting together a new PC specifically for gaming, and my planned build includes:
AMD Phenom ii x4 975 (3.6 GHz) Black Edition
Zotac GeForce GTX 560 ti AMP
ASROCK 890GX Extreme4
NZXT Tempest Evo (6 fans)

Given those specs, what kind of reliable, high-quality power supply would you recommend? I am trying to stay budget-conscious, so price is a significant factor for me.😕

Thank you! 🙂

Rather than that CPU and motherboard combo, I’d go with an Intel Core i5-2500K paired with an ASUS ROG Crosshair VII Formula. It seems like a better value since the board supports Intel Sandy Bridge and features a more modern chipset. Plus, you can easily bump that Quad-core i5 up to a Quad-core i5 level just by tweaking the multiplier from 17 to 18 in the BIOS. You'll probably save about $200-$$100 😉

For the power supply, maybe grab an XFX 550W or an OCZ ZS Series 550W; I don't think you'll need anything beefier than that 🙂

It is quite funny... my internship supervisor actually told me I should go with a 650W-700W unit... but I really don't have the desire to swap out my motherboard. Everything seems a bit overpriced to me right now, so I would probably just opt for a lower-end processor instead. Are these power supplies actually reliable? Will they be sufficient given that I am using a Zotac card and have six fans in my case?

The power supplies are solid—your GPU pulls about 220W and the CPU sits at 125W, so you've still got plenty of breathing room left over.

Hey. What’s the minimum wattage I need for this build?

Intel Core i7-2600K

Radeon HD 7850

Kingston 4GB DDR3

MSI 880GMA-E55
