Can someone recommend a decent power supply? I sold my old Corsair CX500—not my best decision, maybe—and now I need a replacement. I’m looking to pick something up from an American online retailer or a local shop that ships within the States. Ideally, I want something fully modular, at least 600W, and preferably with an 80 Plus Gold certification... if I can find one for around $85–$100.

My current build is
Intel Core i5 4670k
MSI Z87 G45
MSI Radeon R9 270x OC
Samsung SSD Pro
2x HDD
3x fans

You don't really need a powerhouse like that, but hey, your money. 😛 SOMETHING LIKE THIS would be more than enough for you. 🙂

Fully modular (not semi-modular), Gold rated, and 600W? Honestly, there is no way you'll find that for that price—not even here in the States.

The only realistic option near that range is this semi-modular one for $257 Seasonic 550G

Hey there, I’ve got two questions for you guys. First off, can a Corsair CX430 handle this specific build:

AMD FX X6 6300

LC Power LC-CC-97, socket 775/1155/1156/AMD

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P, AM3+

RAM: Crucial 8GB DDR3 1600 Mhz (PC3-12800) CL11

2x Hard Drives

And my second question is about finding the cheapest brand-new power supply that won't choke on this setup:

MB: ASUS P5KPL-AM
-----------------------------------------------------
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 + LC CC 95 Cooler
-----------------------------------------------------
GPU: AMD Radeon Sapphire HD6850 Vapor-X
-----------------------------------------------------
RAM: 4GB DDR2 (2x2)
-----------------------------------------------------
2x Hard Drives
-----------------------------------------------------

1. Sure, provided the graphics card is a decent model.

2. An EVGA 500W works; I could go with something cheaper, but it’s honestly not worth the hassle since they're only a few bucks less and usually lower quality anyway.

Timothy Kim60 said:1. It’ll work fine, provided you aren't trying to run some high-end GPU.

2. With an EVGA 500W, you could technically go with a cheaper power supply, but honestly, why bother? They're usually just a few bucks cheaper and significantly lower quality.

I totally forgot to mention—I'd probably end up pairing that build with an Radeon R9 280.

Hmm, it might work, but it could struggle a bit. For a setup like that, you're better off going with an EVGA 500W; they aren't pricey and it'll handle the load without any issues. 🙂

Alright, thanks for the input. 👍

Hey guys, quick question—can an EVGA 500 W handle this build:

AMD FX X6 6300 + LC-CC-95
GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3P
AMD Radeon R9 280X
2x HDD
1x8GB DDR3 RAM 1600 MHz
Probably just some case fans for now, and maybe adding another 8GB of RAM down the road...

Yeah, it works. You're looking at maybe 400W max for the whole rig, so you've got about 100W to spare.

GPU pulls 250, CPU is 95W, then everything else is roughly 50-60W.~~

Will an EVGA SuperNOVA 850 be enough to handle an i5-4690K overclocked to 4.5 GHz paired with an NVIDIA GTX 970 SLI setup?

It would handle that just fine—honestly, even a 650W 80 PLUS Gold unit would do the job, and frankly, a 550W Gold would suffice too. This 850W unit is complete overkill for that build.

I tried telling him that too, but the guy at the store keeps insisting I need at least an 850W unit...

Honestly, I think this is more than enough for me
EVGA 650 BQ, Corsair RM650, 80 PLUS Gold, Full modular.

That guy is an idiot. This build would run perfectly fine on a basic mainstream power supply like an EVGA 450 W—the entire setup wouldn't even pull 300W under full load.

😉

650W should be fine.

I missed the SLI requirement 🤣

In that case, it'll pull somewhere north of 400W, but definitely staying under 450W at full load

My power supply just kicked the bucket, so I'm looking for recommendations for this specific build. I want something high-quality with an 80 PLUS Gold certification, and I don't mind going a bit higher on the wattage if it makes sense. Looking to buy from Best Buy.

Motherboard: AMD 760G/SB710 socket AM3+, DDR3, audio, SATA, G-LAN, PCI-E
CPU: AMD FX X6 6300 (3.5GHz)
Memory: 8 GB, DDR3 1600MHz
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon R7 265
Hard Drive: 1000.0 GB SATA 7200 RPM
Optical Drive: DVD±RW, SATA
