I don't know, I wouldn't really agree with that. Kinks has become way too expensive for what you actually get. You can find a 750W power supply without any trouble at all. Personally, I paid $133 for an EVGA 750W 80 PLUS Gold, and it handles my setup just fine—even when I'm overclocking both my CPU and GPU. Though, I guess I rarely see those kinds of performance gains unless you're running a much beefier rig than yours
.
My advice? Just keep looking. If you’re dead set on buying something brand new, maybe check out Yahoo or Best Buy. But honestly, if you want to save some cash, definitely take a look at Craigslist . For the exact same amount of money, you could probably snag a much more powerful power supply, or maybe even find a great deal for less

Hey guys, can an EVGA 750W handle two AMD Radeon R9 280X cards in a CF setup?
Here's the rest of the build:
1 x MSI Z97-G45 Gaming, S1150, Intel Z97, 4xDDR3 1066-3000
1 x Intel Core i5-4460 (3.20GHz, 1MB, 6MB, 84 W, 1150) Box
1 x DDR3 8GB (2x4GB) Kingston, 1866MHz, CL10, Kingston Fury
1 x TOSHIBA 1TB, 7200rpm, SATA 6 Gb/s, 32MB, DT01ACA100
1 x Kingston SSD 120GB HyperX Fury, 2.5", SATA 3 6G
1 x Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo, 2011, 1366/1156/775/AM3/ 626g, 13-32dB

Yeah, you could do it, but honestly? I’d rather go with an i5 4690k paired with an MSI GTX 970—in that case, this power supply would be more than enough http://www.bestbuy.com/example-link than trying to run dual R9 280X cards.

Yeah, but it was a bit of a struggle.

I already picked up all the GPUs at a killer price—paid my buddy about $2,300 total—and I'm planning to jump on an i7 in about five months. But I keep hearing people say that 750W won't cut it...

Getting two R9 280Xs for $767 is a decent deal, provided you actually have a warranty on them. Otherwise, honestly, you could just grab a brand new GTX 970 for $833 with a full 2-year warranty. Plus, that thing only pulls 145W, whereas your two R9 280Xs are going to suck up around 500W.
Upgrading to an i7 isn't really worth it—you won't gain anything meaningful and you'll basically just be throwing money away. Unless you're looking at the K-series, but even then, it’s way too expensive for an upgrade that won't give you any significant performance boost.

I’ve still got a year and a half left on the warranty, so I’m not sweating that part. I know the NVIDIA GTX 970 doesn't pull much power, but I've always stuck with NVIDIA, so I figured it was time to switch things up with an AMD card. Plus, the aesthetics on this one look killer, which is a nice bonus for my setup...

Honestly, when you're dropping that kind of cash on a high-end rig, you might as well go big on the power supply and do it right. This would be the perfect pick for you:

Sean Garcia3 is probably already rocking an EVGA 750W power supply anyway—plus, you suggested the NVIDIA GTX 970 and a 4690, but he actually picked up the AMD Radeon R9 280X and the processor. Maybe try reading a bit more closely?

Larry Ortiz5 said:Sean Garcia34, he definitely already has an EVGA 750W power supply under his belt. You also recommended him a GTX 970 and a 4690, but he actually went out and grabbed a 280X and a CPU. Maybe try reading more carefully next time.

My bad, I didn't realize he'd already pulled the trigger on everything. He just posted a thread recently saying he was planning to build a rig, so I figured he was still in the "shopping around" phase this week since he was asking about power supplies.

Could this CyberPowerPC 600W power supply handle a CFossfire HD 6870 + 6870 setup—or maybe an HD 6870 + 6850? If not, what’s the minimum wattage I actually need? Thanks.

To be honest, I've never heard of that one. Personally, I wouldn't risk playing around with a power supply like that.

Run, man. That power supply from $67 is a joke. It’s honestly a miracle it even runs a single 6870. You should probably swap it out ASAP.

Thanks. Just for clarity—I just measured the wall draw during a full load benchmark—the system is pulling 310W, and it sits around 110-120W at idle. Based on that, if I were to add another 6870, total load shouldn't exceed 550W, right?

Just because a power supply claims to be 600W doesn't mean it actually delivers 600W. It might not even hit 400W. You have 600W units for $67 and then you have them for $233—you really think there isn't a massive difference? I can't find any solid specs on that specific unit, but based on how little anyone knows about it, I'd bet it's some cheap junk like a Thermaltake 600W from $60... I recommended a PSU that can definitely handle your build, but if you want to gamble by adding another card to the CF, go ahead and enjoy the fireworks 😁

If you decide to go with that EVGA 750W, you really won't have anything to worry about.
