thanks, solid chart

They clearly put some work into the power consumption; both pull less than a Radeon HD 4850

So, I’ve settled on the Radeon HD 5850 paired with an AMD Ryzen 5 5500—planning to run them off a Corsair CX400W. Are we absolutely certain this setup won't buckle under pressure? I'd rather not deal with a total system meltdown. 😉 I'm thinking about pushing the CPU toward 3.5 GHz, though I'll leave the GPU at stock for now—it handles everything on very high settings just fine as it is. 🙂

I suppose I'd rather not deal with the unpleasantness of everything frying at once. 😉 As for plans, I might try pushing the CPU overclock to somewhere around 3.5 GHz—though for now, I’ll leave the GPU at stock settings, since it seems capable enough to handle most games on very high regardless. 🙂

Well, give it a shot, I guess....
😁

Personally, I've been running a 9800GTX+ alongside an E7400 in a build with that exact power supply for about a year now, and everything has been fine. If I recall correctly, that GTX+ probably draws more juice than the Radeon HD 5850—or maybe it's roughly the same...

Thanks guys—I'll just go ahead and grab those 400 watts then. 🙂

Is it actually worth grabbing an Antec TruePower Quattro 1200 if I'm trying to save some cash? It’s used

.

It really depends on how much cash you're playing with. I wouldn't drop more than $167that if it's second-hand, especially since a brand new 1000W unit goes for about $400.
With used gear, unless you have a multimeter on hand, you can't really know what kind of shape it's in, though even then, those testers aren't always super reliable.

That thing is an absolute beast (assuming nothing inside is fried and it actually works)... but you really ought to verify it with a multimeter (and maybe stress test it on a decent rig) before handing over any cash.

The manufacturer is Enhance ... which is a huge plus.

The real question is: do you even need that much headroom? Is it worth the investment?

If you have (or plan on building) a PC that pulls, say, 200, 300, or 400W ... why on earth would you buy a kilowatt-class PSU? And if that Antec ends up costing more than $50 (I think the VX 550 with a 5-year warranty starts around there $198 IIRC) ... then it’s just a bad deal for a low-end build.

Bottom line: what are your specs, and is the unit actually functional? That's all that matters.

Here’s the build: an AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.2, a Radeon HD 4850, and two drives—that's the core of it!
The power supply is coming from a buddy, so I'm 100% sure it's solid, and he's letting me have it for $100... I know my setup doesn't really need more than 300W, but you don't just walk away from a deal like this!

I'm looking for some advice. I'm planning to pick up an i3 or an i5, a Radeon HD 5850, one HDD, and an optical drive. I want to overclock the processor to somewhere north of 3.5 GHz, maybe even higher. Can someone recommend a power supply that doesn't cost more than 400$167? It needs to be reliable and safe—ideally quiet, too. Feel free to list a few options, as I might need to buy everything from a single retailer in the same area.

A 550W unit feels like overkill for me.
The VX 450 should do the job just fine.

I’m not cutting corners on my GPU or CPU, so I have to find savings elsewhere. That’s why this Corsair 400W is over $33 cheaper than 😁

Hey there.
I am actually going to die from the sheer noise this power supply is making. It’s some cheap junk I picked up from Micro Center—honestly, I can't even remember which specific model it was, just one of those bottom-tier ones. $40 What did they pull on me after everything fried? Just a quick heads-up—whenever the clouds roll in and I hear even a hint of thunder, I have to kill the power to my PC immediately. The electricity starts jumping around like crazy the second things get stormy. 😳 Look, I’ve gotta say, a UPS is just way too steep for me right now. I need something that actually works—something stable and decent—but we're talking around the 400W range. That's it. $133.

I'm mulling this over:
So, I was looking at this super silent Tagan 400W... maybe? It’s one of those units that claims to be whisper-quiet, which honestly sounds like a pipe dream most of the time. I guess we've all been burned by "silent" hardware before, right? Still, there's something about that specific Tagan 400W Corsair 400W combo that just sticks in my head. Probably just wishful thinking on my part.
So, I was looking at that Corsair 400W again. Honestly, it’s just one of those things that makes you wonder where we're all headed. It’s fine, I guess, if you aren't trying to power a small city or anything, but you know how it is. You think you've got a solid setup, then reality hits you. Maybe it'll hold up, maybe it won't. Who knows? Life's full of disappointments like that.

What’s the move here if I want to avoid that annoying buzzing sound? I really just want to hear my components doing their thing and not some loud-ass power supply whining at me. Maybe there's a better option out there?

Thanks a million!

It’s definitely Corsair. High quality and super quiet. You can probably snag a better deal over at AMD:
CORSAIR 400W power supply, CX Series CMPSU-400CXEU, 12cm fan. $130
