It really depends on the specific series. You’re going to find high points and low points regardless of which one you pick.

If I had to pick, I’d probably hit up Accenture first, then maybe Zalman.

Hey everyone!

My power supply has been acting up for a while now—making all sorts of noises, vibrating through the case, rattling the chassis... you know the drill. It's definitely time to swap it out, so I'm hunting for a budget-friendly fix to keep this old bucket running...

Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K @ 3.30GHz
RAM: 8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz
MB: ASRock P67 Pro3 (CPUSocket)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2GB
Disk: Seagate ST3160811AS

Right now, I'm running an XFX 480.

Thanks.

At the very least THIS, whereas THIS is a slightly more expensive, yet much better, best buy.

I'd go with the Fortron Hyper... especially if they're thinking about upgrading their GPU later on.

It'll hold its own for now, but I wouldn't dream of trying a major GPU upgrade on this thing. That’s why going with the Hyper is definitely the way to go.👍

While I wait for my next paycheck to hit, I’ve been doing a little bit of digging and browsing... What are your thoughts on the Corsair CX500?

At the current price point, this is probably the worst value power supply on the entire US market 😉

If you think you've scored a deal on a CX unit from a local used market, it might actually be worth it. That power supply is solid, but honestly, buying one brand new just doesn't make sense—especially when you're looking at the end of the line for the Fortron Hyper 500W. 🙂

So, I guess, what would you consider a fair price for a power supply like that?

~$67 would be a solid deal. If you found a listing, just paste it here so we can see exactly what we're looking at.

Good grief, there's no way I'm dropping $200 on that. 😁

Well, I suppose I stumbled upon this. I suppose this Zalman 600W GLX might be worth looking at, though I can't say for certain if it's actually any good. It seems like a decent enough option for a basic build, I guess. Maybe around $200? I guess. 🤷

You could probably grab it, especially if there's any kind of warranty left. That power supply is basically the Fortron Hyper tier. I guess you might just want to double-check that it doesn't have some crazy whining noise or anything, since the price is pretty low.

He mentions it's brand new in the box, though it doesn't come with a warranty.😢

It’s totally possible it "fell off a truck." 🍿 If it really is factory sealed and unopened, you'll be able to tell, and if so, it's definitely a killer deal 👍

I’ve been running a moda COM midi tower with a C-707 LCD featuring a dual-fan 400W power supply. It’s been a workhorse for about eight years now, but since I’m upgrading my graphics card, I finally need something with more headroom. I’m looking for something in the 450W to 600W range. The thing is, my case uses a top-mounted PSU configuration, which means most of the heat exhausted from the system passes directly through the power supply unit itself. My old setup used two fans to handle that airflow, and I never ran into any overheating issues. Looking at what’s on the market today, almost everything seems to be single-fan designs, which makes me a bit nervous about thermal buildup inside the unit... Is it even possible to find a high-quality dual-fan PSU these days? If not, which single-fan models would you recommend for better airflow? I’m not looking for cheap junk, but I don’t want to overspend on an overkill enthusiast unit either. Ideally, I'd like to stay under $217 max.

That thing is ancient history; modern power supplies are miles ahead of where they used to be. You missed the most critical part of this—what kind of components are you actually running?

You’ve already got your own thread going here 😛

I highly doubt you're looking for a 600-$217 watt power supply, especially since you mentioned things are a bit tight financially. I might be able to help you piece something together if you haven't already picked up the rest of your parts—just let me know what kind of budget we're working with.
