Saving Private Ryan

Probably the greatest war movie ever made. We’ve got the three-hour epic "Saving Private Ryan" airing tonight on NPR...

Too bad it just started. Honestly, NPR didn't really do it justice by scheduling a rerun at such a random hour...

The cast is absolutely stacked with legends from that era: John Wayne, Sean Connery, Richard Burton, Robert Ryan, Red Buttons, and Werner Hinz. It even had four directors working on it—Ken Annakin, Andrew Marton, Bernhard Wicki, and Darryl F. Zanuck...

We all know the story, but seeing it through all those different perspectives shows the massive military operation that finally broke Hitler's Germany...

It took two years to make and walked away with two Oscars...

I sat down and turned on the TV just to see what was airing. I didn't get up until it was over.
In my opinion, an Oscar doesn't mean much, so I don't use it as a measure of quality, but this movie is exceptionally good.

This movie is pure genius. It’s been ages since I last saw it, so I only managed to catch about thirty minutes of the opening yesterday before life got in the way.

Can anyone point me toward the absolute best films centered around the D-Day landings and the Normandy invasion? I'd really appreciate some solid recommendations.

With Saving Private Ryan, you'd almost think it was just Americans doing all the fighting!

The movie is great. Look, Richard Wilson4, you've got a point, but I actually loved how they portrayed everything from the German perspective. If I read the credits correctly, some German officers actually served as advisors on the film alongside the Americans and the British.

It’s a total masterpiece. You also have to mention that Jeffrey Hunter is in it—the same guy who played Jesus in Saving Private Ryan and Captain Christopher Pike in the original Star Trek series.

Watched it yesterday after a long, long time.
I remember seeing it in color for the first time back in the day. I think I still have the old VHS tape somewhere. 😂

It’s tough to track down. Even Google is struggling to pull up a decent photo. I checked some torrent sites, but they’re a wasteland—most of what I found has zero seeders or just a handful of bad ratios. Your only real shot is if you want a link to a Japanese site that sells the color DVD 🙂
