Urethral surgery recovery: What to expect?

Hi everyone,

I ended up at the urologist today because I’ve been dealing with these relentless bladder infections that just won't quit. My primary doctor sent me over since all my test results come back perfectly normal, yet the inflammation keeps coming back... it's incredibly frustrating.☕
After sitting in the waiting room for two agonizing hours,😠 this specialist gives me nothing more than a cursory glance before deciding I need surgery under local anesthesia. Apparently, they need to dilate the urethra because "that's likely the culprit."😕.
When I tried to ask for some actual details on how the procedure works, he just brushed me off with: "Oh, it's a minor thing—just a small incision, three stitches, and you'll be out of there the next day..."
Of course, I didn't even get a chance to follow up with any real questions after that dismissive remark.😢

So, I'm wondering if anyone here has dealt with something similar?
What should I actually be expecting? What is this procedure even meant to fix?
I've been scouring the internet for answers, but I haven't found much of substance...🤷

I would truly appreciate any insight you can share.😁

Did you end up going through any more specific urology tests... maybe something like a CT urogram, an IVP, or one of those other imaging scans?

So, here’s the deal. I went to see my doctor today, and this was the breakdown:

Since there aren't any bacteria present, I have a follow-up appointment on Monday. They’re going to use some kind of probe to check if my urethra is narrowed or constricted...
If it turns out to be narrowed, I'll have to go under the knife, but if everything looks clear, then no surgery is needed...

I haven't done any specialized testing yet, though they did tell me I need blood work, a urinalysis, and a gynecological exam. But honestly, when I finally sat down with the urologist, he seemed completely indifferent—he didn't even bother asking for my results, even though my primary physician says they’re all fine, including the gyno report...

I really don't know what to make of any of this...
I've realized now that it isn't a bacterial issue or anything like that. Everything would have been perfectly fine for months, and then, literally overnight, an inflammation just... appears...🤷

If anyone else has dealt with something similar, please speak up, because I am genuinely at a loss for what to do next...

Ugh, I don't even know where to start... honestly. Ever since I was a little kid dealing with some urinary tract reflux, it's been nothing but constant bladder infections. They tell me it's chronic cystitis now, which is just great. I actually had to head into the hospital for a checkup today because, out of nowhere, I saw blood in my urine this morning—which hasn't happened in years. And of course, right when things get scary, I happen to be on antibiotics for a dental issue... I'm taking Augmentin 1000mg twice a day and Medazol 400mg three times a day. So yeah, red urine today. I totally panicked and rushed to the ER urology department, but the doctor there was such a joke. He did a super rushed exam, and the ultrasound was a mess because his nurse kept snatching the machine away for some other doctor. He ordered an ultrasound for my kidneys and bladder, said everything looks fine, and gave me a diagnosis of cystitis. Then he just piled more pills on me—Nolicin 400mg twice a day! I tried telling him what I was already taking because I'm terrified the bleeding is from the other meds, but he just pushed the Nolicin on me anyway. Like, thanks for nothing, I guess...
I don't really have much useful advice to give you, except that back when I was a little girl, they performed a cystoscopy on me. It’s where they slide a probe through the urethra... it’s thin, almost like a needle, but still. They push it all the way to the bladder and fill it with liquid to see how the bacteria behaves. I remember it hurting like absolute hell. Though, I was just a kid then... adults probably have a higher pain tolerance. But that's how they check the canal, the bladder, and the bacteria. It's a really good diagnostic tool, but let me tell you, it is definitely not pleasant.

But... if my memory serves me right, the clit isn't exactly located where the urethra is, or am I just completely losing my mind here?
I mean, you're telling me that even with all those infections, they never even suggested an operation like that to you?😲
That part is starting to worry me a little bit...
Maybe we aren't even dealing with the same thing, who knows, but this whole situation where they just keep hitting you with antibiotics... it doesn't make sense to me. Honestly...

So, did they at least manage to figure anything out after that exam, or...?

I really do feel for you because I know exactly what you're going through. Though, truth be told, things aren't even that bad for me, so I won't bother complaining about my own issues anymore—it's clear some people have it much tougher than I do...
I'm crossing my fingers that they finally get everything sorted this time so you can put these problems behind you once and for all...

that exam was a cystoscopy, and they’ll probably want you to go back in for another one after a while...
So, we have two openings down there if you aren't counting the anus. Since they didn't go through the vaginal canal for me, they had to go through the urethra. I think I might have been totally wrong about the terminology being the clitoris or whatever, but basically, that's how the procedure works. It's definitely a good idea to get it checked out though.
Ugh, I feel like I'm going to throw up all day today. It's driving me crazy. I'm honestly terrified that all those pills I've been popping might have messed up my kidneys... :-((

Hang in there. Just hold on a little longer because I’m crossing my fingers that you get through all this as soon as possible. Honestly though, I really think you ought to go talk to your doctor. You need to tell them that this mountain of pills is making you feel miserable and that you just can't deal with it anymore... stay strong.😉

Off-topic—I’m heading in for a biopsy on Monday. It's a similar procedure, so I'm hoping they actually manage to find some real answers this time so I can finally put all this behind me, hopefully for good!!😢>

you aren't going to run into any trouble
if something were actually dangerous, they would have acted immediately
if it turns out to be related to your bladder, just relax a bit and let them check through the catheter and maybe poke at your abdomen in a few spots😛
eventually, it barely shows

tales as funny as they are, I don't have much advice other than mentioning that I had a cystoscopy when I was a kid. They slide this tiny probe through the urethra—it's thin like a needle—all the way to the bladder to check for bacterial growth while filling the bladder with fluid. I'm going through the exact same thing... I actually had surgery when I was 8, and everything was fine until about 3 years ago when the infections started coming back. It usually happens in the winter, and they always find E. coli in my urine. I’d just take an antibiotic, it would clear up, and the culture would come back clean. But lately, I've been dealing with my 8th infection in the last year alone. 😲I've cycled through pretty much everything from Zithromax to my last dose of Keflex a few weeks ago. It cleared up briefly, but for the last two days, it's back. Sometimes, like this last time, I didn't even bother with a lab test because we just assumed it was the usual E. coli, but now I'm starting to think it's something else. I honestly don't understand why they don't run a sensitivity test to see which specific antibiotic will actually work. 🤷I'm planning to head back to my doctor tomorrow and pester her until she sends me for every test imaginable. If they have to hospitalize me, fine. I might even go to a specialist to get a urethral swab, which was offered before, but I turned it down because I thought a standard urine test would show everything. I figured my GP would refer me to a urologist if it were necessary, but clearly, a standard culture doesn't pick up things like Ureaplasma, which could be the culprit here. It feels like you almost have to end up with a kidney infection or sepsis before anyone takes this seriously. 👎
..Oh, and one time when I went to the ER because I was seeing blood, the doctor actually asked me, "Are you sure you aren't just on your period?"... Yeah, thanks for the brilliant insight, genius.

I’ve been doing some deep dives online about all of this and honestly, it's the same story everywhere you look...
drink tons of fluids (I'm hitting 2 liters a day plus everything else—so basically a liter of cranberry juice, sodas...)☕
wear slippers, stay out of drafts, keep your feet warm, just watch out for the chill...
stick to cranberry juice, lingonberry, or bearberry tea...
I have tried every trick in the book and it always boils down to this:
I feel an infection coming on, and sure enough, it hits me. I go get an antibiotic, then three or four weeks later, I'm right back there getting another prescription, even though my urine culture comes back totally fine in the meantime.😕
And once I finally clear it after maybe three or four months—which is what I was trying to say earlier—the whole cycle just starts all over again...
But the real kicker is how fast it happens. I can catch an infection literally overnight. If a cold breeze hits me—even in the middle of summer—or if my feet get cold for even a minute, boom, there it is again!!!!😠

And frankly, I just can't deal with this anymore. I can't be standing there giving a presentation and having to excuse myself to the restroom three times while turning bright red like an idiot. Not to mention I've completely stopped being intimate because I'm paranoid that maybe that's what triggers these things... since my boyfriend and I are long-distance, we don't get much chance anyway... but still, I just can't take it!!!😠

I know I'm probably not a medical emergency or anything, but for God's sake, my entire life revolves around finding a bathroom. Even when I'm just going for a walk with someone, I'm constantly scanning the area to see where the nearest restroom is... and don't even get me started on the stinging, the anxiety, the pain, and all that nonsense...

Honey, the clitoris isn't the urethra, and you certainly can't stick anything through the clitoris.

Just for your information, there are two separate openings inside the vagina—one leads to the uterus and the other is where you pee.

The clitoris is located just above the labia on the outside.

When I read stuff like this, I’m honestly not even surprised anymore that someone would opt for surgery based on an "I guess this might help, who knows" diagnosis from a doctor who clearly couldn't care less.

So that happened—the famous checkup. I know exactly what I'm dealing with, and I know my own body,😠
I sat there for two whole hours just waiting for a forty-five-second interaction. 🙂 He finally showed up, glanced at me, checked the calibration of the urinary tract, and then he was out the door.
Of course, everything is "fine" with me and my urinary tract is perfectly healthy. Actually, better than fine.
The guy basically has no clue what’s actually going on with me; he just handed me some Zithromax to take for the next three months and insisted on leaving because he was in such a rush...🙂 🙂
Then my nurse starts lecturing me about how I need to drink tons of fluids, watch my diet, stick to teas, be careful with everything...🙂
And honestly, it just slipped out of me: do you people think I'm stupid? I've been struggling with this for four years and I follow every single piece of advice to the letter.
And her response? "Well, then you're just a little more sensitive!"
That’s it? That is the answer? That’s the plan for the rest of my life?
I can't believe it, and I certainly can't accept it!!

But I did push back against the doctor and told her all about the advice you all gave me. She said she'd help as much as she could, but she just sent me off for all sorts of tests again. We'll see tomorrow once I hand over the materials and get the results...

Anyway, I've been doing some Googling, but I can't quite pin down exactly what a nephrologist does. From what I understand, they deal with kidney function, right?
So I'm wondering, what's even the point of seeing him if all my results—from urine cultures and bloodwork to urea and creatinine levels—have been perfectly normal so far? Not a single type of bacteria has ever been found; sure, there are rare instances of bacteria, but it's never E. coli or anything like that...

It could potentially be an issue with the bladder itself—perhaps something like an overactive bladder or some other underlying dysfunction. You might want to check out the Mayo Clinic's website; they have some incredibly thorough resources regarding urinary disorders.
Ninur acts as a urinary antiseptic, which helps both prevent and treat bladder inflammation. It’s quite effective if you're dealing with an actual infection.

The specialist appointment I went to was actually for a calibration test—basically to see if I was even a candidate for surgery or not.
Thank God, everything came back clear regarding the canal, so they decided to scrap the surgical option entirely.
Part of me is incredibly relieved to have dodged that bullet, though, honestly, it feels like I just traded one problem for another since we still don't have a definitive answer.
I suppose I should be grateful that no bacteria showed up on the tests, unless that E. coli is just playing some masterclass game of hide-and-seek...
I've come to terms with where things stand. I'm going to take care of myself as best I can and fight to get this resolved once and for all. After all, I'm a tough cookie—stubborn as hell and not one to roll over easily—it's just that some days, finding the strength to keep pushing is a struggle...

It’s actually the urethra, for goodness' sake.
The urethra is the urinary tract, and the opening is located within the labia minora. The clitoris sits above them and serves an entirely different purpose—we certainly don't use the clitoris to pee!

I haven't had a chance to read through everything yet, but I am curious—how did they confirm that you don't have any bacteria present? Theoretically, a urine culture can come back clear, but it might still be worth getting a urethral swab done. Bacteria can sometimes settle right there, and they don't always show up on a standard urine test.
