. After being struck by four gunshots, he was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 9:15 p.m.

We’re approaching the 30th anniversary of one of the most tragic moments in music history. On December 8th, news outlets, radio stations, and TV networks will all be looking back at the life and legacy of the eternal member of The Beatles—John Lennon—who was tragically taken from us in New York City by the shots fired by Mark David Chapman.

To mark the occasion, I’m actually putting together a 60-minute radio retrospective on one of my greatest musical inspirations.

I’ve been wondering: which songs from his days with The Beatles and his solo career best capture his essence? How can I best introduce his massive musical heritage to people who are just now discovering how this group became such a cornerstone of global culture?

Should I trace his journey from those early years, soaking up overseas rock 'n' roll hits, through the height of Beatlemania and receiving his honor from the Queen, all the way to his activism fighting to end the war in Vietnam and his advocacy for political and civil rights?

I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Back when I was working at a different radio station, we put together this rather polished "In Memoriam" special to mark his birthday.
It moved through the years at a relaxed pace, weaving in his most iconic tracks to capture the essence of each era—though, naturally, we made sure to lean heavily into his post-Beatles years and that solo career of his.
Besides, with the Christmas season right around the corner, it feels like the perfect time to revisit "War Is Over."

It’s been exactly 30 years since John Lennon was killed right outside his apartment in Manhattan. The most beloved Beatle was mourned for days on end, and his passing—much like the life he led—left an indelible mark on pop culture.
