Someone's trying to hack my account 😱

"Someone has tried to log into your account on Reddit with an incorrect password...."

So, I was sitting down today to do a bit of digital housekeeping and clear out my inbox on Reddit—something I haven't gotten around to in ages—and while I was scrolling through, I stumbled upon this email: "Failed login Notification on Reddit". Naturally, I opened it up, and it said the following:

Dear coppermarlin13,

Someone has tried to log into your account on Reddit with an incorrect password at
least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your
account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address:
10.12.162.144

Reddit

Now, here’s the thing: I have absolutely no memory of trying to log into the site and failing, let alone missing my password five times in a row! 😕 Granted, I don't have this computer entirely to myself—friends occasionally borrow it to hop online and all that—but looking at that IP address, it’s pretty obvious this wasn't anyone using my PC. I’m from the South, and from what I’ve gathered, IP addresses around my area usually start with a 7... so I am genuinely baffled by this. 😕

Does anyone happen to know how someone could try to break into my account like this?

Also, can the administrators or moderators on this forum actually see what specific password a user is using?

Does the wBulletin software even grant admins and mods that kind of technical access?

I mean, I realize that a hacking attempt isn't exactly a crime in itself, but I'm curious if there's any way to figure out who was behind it (without involving the police, haha).

Nobody actually tried to break into your account.
The exact same thing happened to me—same date, same IP address as yours 🙂
It was that day when they were spending the entire morning doing maintenance on Reddit, so who knows what kind of mess they made behind the scenes while they were at it.🙄

I panicked just as much as you did that day, thinking someone was hacking me, so I immediately went ahead and changed my password to something thirty characters long just to be safe. 🤣

Megan Diaz33, I actually went to go change my password too, but then I just kind of gave up halfway through. I was like, "Honestly, who cares? Read whatever you want and say whatever you want, even if you do get hacked." 🤣🤣

I definitely did a double-take when I saw this earlier today. Now that the initial shock has worn off, the whole thing just seems hilarious. 🤣🤣

I think I jumped even harder than you did. Because of their sheer stupidity, I ended up deleting almost all my private messages 😠 🤣 before finally deciding to change my password.
After that, I was going around everywhere trying to get someone to find out who was responsible. 🤣

It was such a huge weight off my shoulders—like a massive Stone being lifted—once I heard it was actually on them.

When you open your inbox, there's an option in the bottom right corner that says Save all private messages as:. You can select a format like XML, and it'll just save everything wherever you want—there's really no need to delete them.😉

Well, looks like it's already too late now.

I mean, who actually takes the time to look at the fine print and see what other options are available?😢

Look, I've been around since 2003 and I didn't know about that either! Honestly, I don't even see why anyone cares—you can just copy/paste stuff into a Notepad file, or better yet, save the whole page as an HTML file to keep the formatting. Or just take a screenshot. It’s not rocket science.

She clearly deleted them in a panic. She obviously had something she didn't want anyone seeing.
Plus, maybe there was a reason she didn't want those messages sitting on her hard drive, especially if she isn't the only one using that computer, or if someone else was looking over her shoulder at the time.
