Midnight Meat Train (2008)

I absolutely loved it! Vinnie is such a legend, right? I ended up getting myself all decked out in similar gear immediately! It actually gave me some serious H.P. Lovecraft vibes too, don't you think? 😁

I downloaded it the other day, but it was in some random language—can't even understand it. I gotta find the English version, but honestly, from the few minutes I did manage to watch, it looks awesome.

This movie is absolute garbage. The plot? Total nonsense—just complete and utter nonsense. And those idiots over at AMC Theatres are out here promoting it like it’s some big-time crime thriller. Good God!

I'm definitely adding this to my watchlist. Aside from the fact that it’s based on a story by Stephen King, I'm mostly hyped because it marks the big Hollywood directorial debut for James Wan...

And honestly, Wan is such a talent; he basically made his name with his own take on the Evil Dead style— VERSUS.

Ever since then, I've had my eye on his work, so I'm pretty stoked to finally catch MMT.

Watched it yesterday. What a disaster!
The beginning actually felt somewhat promising... but those last 15 minutes? I was laughing out of pure frustration.

All in all, if you can avoid it, don't 🙂

This movie has scenes way more brutal than Hostel—an eyeball getting popped out from a hammer blow, someone biting a guy's tongue off and eating it, blood splattering right onto the lens... gross.

I'm not really into sci-fi or horror, so the movie wasn't exactly my cup of tea.
But all things considered, it's watchable. It isn't nearly as bad as Hostel.

Honestly, I'm surprised Brooke Shields actually agreed to be in a flick like this.

This was an incredible watch—just beautifully shot from start to finish. It’s a serious, uncompromising piece of horror that definitely isn't for everyone, though—you have to be in the right headspace for it. If I had to compare the way the story unfolds to anything else, I’d say the tone feels a lot like The Mist. Honestly, this is easily the best adaptation of a Stephen King story we've seen yet.

The entire time, I was thinking about how much I’d love to take that hunk of junk and swing it at the producer, the writer, and the absolute moron who approved the budget for this garbage.

I don't know what's more pathetic. The ending featuring aliens, heart-ripping, and tongue-eating? Or the poorly executed sex scenes clearly added just to give it some "realism" and boost viewership? Or maybe Brooke Shields' desperate acting. Fake, fake, fake.

🙂 Like I said, it isn't for everyone. The theater was actually pretty packed, which surprised me. A few rows ahead of me, people were practically shouting halfway through—complaining about what kind of movie this was, saying they couldn't follow anything, asking what was even happening...
Personally, I actually enjoyed that they didn't make those typical Hollywood compromises just to make Barker's story more "accessible" to the masses. And hey, Steven Seagal is basically the most iconic cinematic killer lately.

Maybe the one silver lining here is that it gets the message out there about people cutting back on meat.

I honestly only sat through this movie because of Vinny; if he hadn't been in it, I probably would have turned it off halfway through... Everything else was just a total disaster, aside from maybe one or two decent gore scenes. The rest of the cast was subpar, the soundtrack was completely forgettable, and there was zero atmosphere—the ending felt more like a parody than an actual horror flick. All in all, it was a tedious, mediocre mess. Because of Vinny 4/10, I’m giving it this, otherwise the rating would be significantly lower.

They weren't aliens.

I enjoyed the movie; you can really feel that Barker atmosphere bleeding through. It feels like they managed to pull that off specifically through the cinematography. 🤔 I'm not usually a fan of gore, but with Barker involved—and I know how cliché that sounds—it actually works as part of the story; you understand why it's there. The only thing is, that little subplot with the cop could have been handled a bit better.

What a complete disaster. A total waste of cash. Honestly, they might have been better off just tossing the money into the street; at least then it would've actually done someone some good!

The most depressing part about all this is that this is actually the most faithful adaptation of a Barker story we've seen, yet the movie turned out so incredibly bland and mediocre. That camera shot racing through some underground CGI subway tunnel? Does everyone nowadays only have those Michael Bay visions when they try to make a horror flick? And what happened to the core theme of the story—about New York City being a place that lives off its own people? Did the director even bother reading the source material?

But since Barker actually signed on as a producer for this one, it’s pretty obvious he isn't exactly losing sleep over how bad it is. I guess I'm done trying to justify his choices. It feels like the guy who once bled the "Book of Blood" has long since lost his edge, and they just replaced him with this talentless clone. Either that, or sucking up to corporate types is just the ultimate creativity killer.

There is one specific moment that actually made me laugh, despite the fact that it takes place on a train crawling with bodies hanging from meat hooks; they end up standing face-to-face just like a classic Western standoff. 🙂
